Chapter Seven
By the time Myrna, Delia, Vincent, Zoey, and I had finished our meeting, everyone had been assigned a task, including me. Zoey would keep an eye on things at the Bean and report back if Carson stopped by to ask any more questions. Myrna was going to nonchalantly see if her network knew of any other people living in their neighborhood that had been robbed.
Apparently, before Vincent retired, heâd had some sort of computer engineering job, so he was going to do some online reconâhis words, not mineâbefore we all got together again. After observing his mannerisms and hearing an occasional word that regular people didnât use in conversations, I believed he may have served in the military at some point during his life.
Even if it was only temporary, owning a pet qualified me for what the group considered our first covert mission, which was extracting information from Ellie. Myrna had volunteered, but her idea of putting a tiny halter and leash on Ziggy so she could take him for a walk in the park had been vetoed. Sheâd gasped, her face turning a deep shade of red when Vincent told her she wouldnât be able to blend in if her guinea pig ended up as an appetizer for one of the bigger dogs during their walk.
Iâd thought the same thing but wouldâve used a gentler way to dissuade her that didnât include verbal images of her beloved petâs death. Iâd learned quickly that tack wasnât one of Vincentâs stronger traits, yet I found myself liking him anyway.
I had to admit that using Harley to do undercover work had been a brilliant idea, one that hadnât occurred to me until Delia told me Ellie owned a Chihuahua and took him on daily walks.
According to Myrna, many of the people, most of them retirees, liked to take their pets to the park a few blocks away from Deliaâs house.
If nothing else, being pulled into a mystery had me contemplating the questions Delia and I needed to ask Ellie rather than reliving the unfortunate circumstances Iâd have to face once I returned home. It made falling asleep and getting some decent rest after everyone left much easier.
I wasnât excited about waking up to doggy breath with licks to my face, but it was a lot better than having my chin whacked by Lunaâs sharp claws. âHey there, bud,â I said, pushing Harley off my chest.
Heâd had no interest in the pet bed Iâd purchased for him and ran around the room and whined until Iâd given in and let him on the bed. As far as sleeping partners went, a dog who liked to cuddle and didnât steal the blankets met with my approval.
Iâd made sure to take Harley outside before going to bed. I didnât know the extent of his potty training, or if heâd even had any, so I checked the floor for any accidents that might have happened while I slept. âGood boy,â I said and scratched his head when I didnât find any.
