Chapter 9

Lacey snapped her mouth shut, her teeth clicking together. Cissy Paulsson. The same woman who was looking for Brian Trammel yesterday. And no wonder, if she was carrying his baby.

“What was that about?” Mina asked, a bit flustered, probably because Lacey had herded her out of the jewelry booth backwards.

Finally the crowd concealed the retreating woman’s bun from Lacey’s sight. “Sorry ‘bout that, but the plot thickens.”

“What?”

“Hang on.” She leaned down and soothed Vixen. “Sorry about that, girl. Extra treat when we get home.” The grumbly frown disappeared and the pup’s little ears perked up immediately.

She rose and linked arms again with her sister. Mindful of the crowd around her, she quietly explained how Cissy fit into the puzzle.

“An affair with the murdered man and having his baby?” Mina whispered back. “Good gravy. Nosey Turner would have a field day in this town.”

“I’m starting to feel like Nosey Turner. Every time I tell myself the whole situation is none of my business, something happens, or the Gift shows me something. And I even think it wanted me to go into that booth. Like a hand in my back guiding me in there.” What good would come of gossip, anyway?

“Don’t remember Granma saying anything like that happened to her,” Mina said.

“Me either.” Lacey twisted her lips. “I guess Cissy probably couldn’t have murdered Brian, since she was at the booth looking for him in the holding barn a couple of minutes after he was murdered.”

“Actually, that puts her in the area at the time of the murder,” Mina said with a lopsided smile. “It only took a minute or so for you to come from the barn to us in the front of the Community Center.”

“Didn’t consider the timing.” Lacey filed the bits of information away for later. This was family time, however much her gift kept trying to put her in the middle of a murder investigation.

Lacey and her sister turned the corner into the avenue lined with carnival games. She pulled Vixen a little closer as the crowd was denser here and more children darted about.

“There they are.” She pointed through the throng of people to the three men high-fiving next to a water balloon popping game. As Lacey got closer, she spied a purple-spotted, light blue, stuffed giraffe between Walker and Jake.

“Looks like y’all did well,” Mina said.

“Jake did great.” Walker patted the stuffed animal’s neck.

“Nah.” Jake grinned. “Mister Walker let me win.”

“What?” he protested. “You’re a better shot than your dad and me combined.”

Jake shook his head, but his smile said he was having a great time.

Lacey chuckled, her heart growing even more sure she meant the word spoken earlier that day.

“How about some rides next?” Garrett asked.

Just the thing to get her mind off murder and focus on her family for a while.

Two hours later, Lacey had ridden half of the rides with Jake, eaten a cornydog, a roll of fluffy pink cotton candy, some of Walker’s loaded tater-tots, and half of Mina’s red velvet funnel cake.
