The Cave

Raegona opened her eyes slowly and noticed a star light night sky above. Around her, the other fire-bloods were also awake. She sat up to see the raging campfire at her feet. A circle of rocks lined what was much more than a simple campfire; it was a raging bonfire. Regardless, she stood and reached into the flames with her arms. Neither her clothes nor flesh were affected. She closed her eyes to embrace the restorative power to the magical core of her being. The other royals joined her around the flames.

The pocket-realm had a night sky, but their center fire lit the green plains around them as if it were dusk. There were rolling hills at one end, a waterfall plateau at the other. The human Traveler played with his dog, throwing something for it to race after and fetch.

The dog ran past him and arced around, heading straight to them. The animal traveled at an incredible speed as if it were going to ram into them but stopped. It watched them with a growl. Its eyes were bloodshot, and its fur looked burned. Then it shook its entire body, and its gray fur was back.

Traveler had joined them. The dog glanced at him for a second, then returned its gaze to the fire-bloods.

“Your animal doesn’t care for us,” Raegona said.

“Do not take it personally.”

“He should view us as an ally, since we both outwardly appear as something we are not.”

“What does it matter?” Traveler asked as he knelt down to stroke his dog’s back. The dog closed its eyes for a moment to enjoy the grooming. “You appear as something long enough, and that’s what you are.”

“A philosopher,” one fire-blood said.

“Thank you for your quick action,” Raegona added.

“You saved my life. I saved yours.”

“You were never in any real danger,” Raegona said.

“Flying over an ice chasm and freezing to death in Borea’s cold are dangers enough for me. Did you succumb to the cold because the fire battle with the goblins weakened you?”

“They were far more powerful than we expected,” the queen said. “They too were not what they seemed.”

“But clearly, you were more powerful than they expected. I didn’t know fire goblins could be burnt to ash.”

“Magic that would not have worked on their hellhounds had the beasts not retreated.”

“Why did your people’s guardian try to kill you?”

“Others obviously swayed him. Remember, neither of us are the original generations that formed the alliance. We honored it. He abandoned it for his own ambitions.”

“To break such an ancient alliance though between your peoples?”

“Alliances change. We knew it would end in this way. However, we were the ones who expected to kill him, not you.”

“I told you. I don’t like cold, and the blizzard he summoned was quite cold.”

“Had you not done what you did, we’d all have been frozen forever.”

“To be eaten at his leisure,” Traveler added. “He was a chenoo.”

“We do not know this creature you speak of, but we defer to your knowledge of this world’s many creatures.
