SIDNEY HARRIS

In my youth, during WWII, I was held prisoner five days a wk. at PS 177 in B’klyn. Later I went to JHS 228. In those days children were allowed to ride the subways—I used mainly the BMT and IRT, rarely the IND—unaccompanied, and I traveled far and wide within NYC. Thus I became very much at home with abbreviations. It’s a brief step from there to drawing cartoons, which are abbr. pieces of fict.

1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Alas, Duke Snider was playing center field for the Dodgers, and I realized I could never be six feet two inches tall and two hundred pounds. Or hit a curveball.

2. What is the accomplishment of which you’re most proud?

This is hypothetical, but if I won the Nobel Prize for something, I’d really show off.

3. List three things you haven’t done yet.

1. Learned to play the piano like Art Tatum.

2. Learned to play the piano like Bud Powell.

3. Learned to play the piano like Lennie Tristano.

4. What are your most current passions?

Baseball—the statistics, not all that running around.

Music—the notes, not all that noise.

Art—the ink … you get it.

5. What words of wisdom do you have?

A square plus B square doesn’t have to equal C square. I’m working on it.

6. How would you prefer to arrive at “The End”?

So out of touch, I had no idea what was going on. Wait—that was yesterday.

7. Whom would you like to meet in The Great Beyond?

Adam—to see if that story about him is true.

8. Imagine a scene from your funeral, and draw it.
