CHAPTER 6

Derek Gunderson! Jubilee had said Derek Gunderson on the phone plain as day. I did up my pants and took the safety off the gun.

“What are you doing?” Jubilee demanded. “Pauline’s out there with him.”

“Then call her inside,” I told him, lifting my gun in the air and meeting his gaze.

“I recognize that look,” Jubilee smiled faintly. “My Canadian cop means business.”

I grinned. “Nothing I take more seriously, Marshal, except maybe fucking.”

Jubilee shook his head and hurried down the hall muttering, I knew there was something off about that guy.” I was at his heels. I waited while he called through the porch door. “Pauline, can you come in here a minute, please?”

There was no answer right away and my heart raced. Jubilee looked at me. I was about to tell him to call her again when the screen door flew open. She looked pissed. Jubilee grabbed her and I raced past. I kicked the door open and pointed my gun at Gunderson, who was sitting on the swing. “Freeze! Hands where I can see them. Get on your knees!”

“Kieran, I…” He tried to look confused. I grabbed him and put him down.

I could hear Pauline chewing out Jubilee inside. “This is ridiculous, Jube,” she was saying, “like all that interrogation at dinner. The two of you, really, macho cops who think they can harass every man who takes even…”

Jubilee was on the porch as I pulled Gunderson to his feet. Pauline came out with him. She fell silent when she saw us.

“I knew you enjoyed rubbing my neck a little too much,” I muttered.

Gunderson sneered. “Too bad you’re a fucking pig. I might have given you a taste of heaven, baby.”

“Gee,” I mocked, “makes me wanna go right out and become a fucking chiropractor-turned-lawyer. Come on, asswipe.” I dragged him down the steps.

“Lock the doors,” Jubilee told his sister. He watched as I shoved the good doctor against the car and cuffed his hands behind him. “Watch your head,” I said, opening the back door of Jubilee’s SUV, then purposely drove his head into the door. “Oops,” I said.

Jubilee gave me the look. I got in the back beside Derek. Jubilee got in the driver’s seat. I kept my gun on my lap, pointed in Gunderson’s direction as Jubilee started the vehicle.

“That’s not necessary,” the prisoner protested. “I’m cuffed. What are you pointing that at me for?”

“It could go off by accident. Shoot your dick straight off. It would be a shame,” I said. “Jubilee, try not to hit any potholes.”

“Yeah, those damn potholes.” He sighed. “I keep telling the mayor to fix ’em. How much you pay in taxes, Derek?” Jubilee glanced at him in the mirror.

“I…he’s crazy, your partner.”

I cradled the gun, flicked my fingers over the trigger. “I like guns.”

“Tell him to point that thing somewhere else, Marshal. You’re the marshal, aren’t you?”

“Yep,” Jubilee said, “but Kieran is crazy, like you said. I don’t mess with that.”

“He can’t…shoot me—”

“Technically,” I interjected, “I could.” I nodded at him.
