"I can't believe it!" Jenna said, her eyes widening with surprise. "You seriously have never seen Citizen Kane."
Danny Mariano glanced down at the sidewalk and shook his head.
"But it's a classic. It's the classic. And you're the old guy here."
Danny raised his hands as though helpless. "I just never had a chance to see it. I don't have a lot of free time to catch many movies. I'm pretty busy with the whole Protecting and Serving thing."
"Yeah, but come on. Citizen Kane came out in 1941. You've had decades to see it!"
"Hey!" Danny grinned and gave her a light punch on the shoulder. "How old do you think I am, anyway?"
Jenna knew she shouldn't tease him about his age, shouldn't make the extra effort to keep reminding him how much older he was. But it was like an itch at the back of her brain that she just had to scratch. The years that separated them in age separated them in other ways as well. It frustrated her to be forced to accept that such a small detail could have such sway over their relationship.
Relationship, she thought with a trace of sadness. Whatever the hell that means.
Throughout the evening, as they strolled around Harvard Square, Jenna kept fighting the impulse to hold Danny's hand. The warm summer night had brought out just about everyone who hadn't gone away to Cape Cod or the New Hampshire mountains for the weekend. The eclectic citizens of Cambridge moved in a ballroom dance rhythm along sidewalks and through shops and restaurants, crossing the streets in mobs whether the light was red or green. There were neo-goths, neo-punks, frat boys and skate rats, and herds of students and once-students who didn't fall into any easy categorization. But what Jenna noticed most was that there were so many couples. It was a perfect night for lovers.
But she and Danny weren't lovers. They were just friends.
Just friends.
Nights like tonight, those could be the two cruelest words in the English language.
They strolled through the Square, window shopping and watching the street musicians that performed on every corner. Acoustic guitars, accordions, flutes, trombones, and even a steel drum band filled the night with conflicting rhythms that magically blended with the noise of the traffic and the sounds of people talking and laughing, creating an almost carnival atmosphere.
As they wended their way along the crowded sidewalk, Jenna couldn't help but steal furtive glances at Danny whenever he wasn't looking at her. His smooth, dark olive complexion glowed with the multicolored city lights, and his eyes glistened whenever he smiled. She was so happy just to be with him.
"How 'bout some coffee, maybe an iced cappuccino before the movie?" Danny asked as they approached Cup o' Joe, a sidewalk café just around the corner from the Harvard Coop. They still had an hour or so to kill before the late showing of a digitally re-mastered version of Citizen Kane. A few feet away, a street magician was doing sleight-of-hand tricks for a small crowd.
