Chapter Seventeen
George pulled up outside the house of the latest victim. Sheâd arrived a little early and there was no sign of anyone. If it wasnât for the cordon across the gate, no one would have known it was a crime scene. She hoped the Tiffany issue was over and her relationship with Whitney was on its way back to normal. Maybe she should have gone to collect Whitney from the station.
After a few minutes, Whitney pulled up in her old Ford. They both got out of their cars, smiled, and said hello, but it seemed a little stilted.
âLetâs go in. It looks like no one else is here,â Whitney said. They ducked under the tape and walked up to the front door. âAnother lovely house. Our murdererâs certainly going after the rich and more mature woman.â
âYes, he does seem to be seeking them out.â
âIâve got Ellie looking into any links between the three, other than the money and being on their own. They might have all belonged to a particular club. Somewhere he can target them. Collecting art seems to be a common thread.â
âIs this victim also a collector?â George said, her curiosity piqued.
âAccording to her son, sheâd recently started. He wasnât sure where her new pieces were. Weâll see what we can find when weâre looking through.â
âInteresting.â George nodded.
âI believe the intruder came in through the patio doors in the lounge. Letâs start in there,â Whitney said.
They walked into the large square room, with high ceilings, ornate ceiling roses, and coving. The furniture was very traditional; brown leather sofas with rolled arms, and three, high-backed armchairs. A large fireplace with a black surround was in the centre of the far wall. On the walls were a number of paintings, mainly country scenes. George took a look.
âJudging by the fine layer of dust on these frames, these arenât new acquisitions.â
âShe has a cleaner,â Whitney said.
âNot all cleaners are made equal,â George quipped.
âI wouldnât know.â
Deciding to ignore Whitneyâs barbed comment, George wandered over to take a look at the built-in mahogany bookcases which lined one of the walls. âAn eclectic mix of books. I wonder if anyone read them or whether they were just for show?â
âThis room is very different from the bedroom,â Whitney said.
âIn what way?â
âThe bedroom is luxurious and modern, whereas this is very traditional.â
They walked over to the patio doors which still showed signs of powder from where SOCO had been dusting for prints. The doors were closed but Whitney opened them and they stepped outside into the garden.
âA typical country-style garden,â George said.
âDo you like it?â Whitney asked.
âYes, much more than the one belonging to Celia Churchill, which was too manicured. This is in keeping with the house.â
âLetâs go upstairs to her bedroom, the actual crime scene,â Whitney suggested.
Once theyâd reached the top of the stairs, George followed Whitney into the bedroom. She glanced around. âI see what you mean, itâs totally different from the rest of the house. It looks newly decorated,â George said.
âMaybe she was going to decorate the whole house and started here,â Whitney said.
