Holly dropped Becky at her little cottage so the librarian could see her daughter and husband briefly before heading back to Bridgeport Library for the evening opening at six. The three women had conferred in the car park outside Serenity after their manicures were finished, coming to no conclusion, but agreeing, as Jamie said, that there was a lot more to investigate.

“Including Joe Fortunada’s will,” Jamie had said. “If he was estranged from his daughter and then made up with her, he may have changed his will. And he appears to have been a very wealthy man. Money is always a good motive for murder, right? Who benefits from Joe’s death? We haven’t really looked into that yet.”

“He might have altered his will when he married Estelle as well,” Holly had noted. “Do you suppose it’s here or on the mainland?”

“It won’t matter. The contents of a will aren’t made public until probate is granted,” Becky had reminded them. “There’s no way for us to find out that information.”

“Unless someone tells us. Or we find out privately.” Jamie had grinned at her friends’ wary expressions. “Oh ye of little faith, you two. You look like you think I’m planning to break into a lawyerr’s office or something. I just mean I’ll bet the police will have access to Joe Fortunada’s will. Maybe Rob will tell us.”

Holly had snorted. “You think? Rob doesn’t generally share confidential details of his work.”

“You could charm it out of him. No?” Jamie had laughed. “Oh well, I’ll ask Miller. It’s amazing the number of contacts that man has. I’ll bet he can find out.”

“Yes, well, don’t do anything silly.” Becky had climbed into Holly’s car, rolling down the window to look out at Jamie. “I’ll see if I can find out anything more about Joe’s family since I had no idea he and his daughter were estranged for so long.” She’d paused in sudden thought. “I wonder if the daughter has come to the island?”

“No idea.” Jamie had shrugged. “We’ll have to find out. I’ll see you two later. At the HIPS meeting if not before.” She’d waved before hopping into her own little car and zooming out of the parking lot.

After dropping Becky, Holly returned to the Hibiscus Inn to be greeted by an ecstatic Truffle at the main door. She laughed as the little dog wiggled and jumped around her, her black feathery tail wagging a mile a minute. Holly bent down to pat her before going in search of her mother. As she passed the breakfast room, Holly smiled at a couple of guests who were helping themselves to soup and rolls.

Although the inn was a bed and breakfast, Maggie had always made a point of putting out soup, rolls, and sometimes a salad of some kind, in the evenings. It was frequently mentioned in their online reviews with guests appreciating the ability to have a light snack instead of going out to dinner every evening. Catching sight of a plate of
