Chapter Twenty-Three

Wanting

I sat there alone in the darkness, near the door to his house. I sat there for a rather long while, thinking about everything. All I’d done and not done, all that had happened, all the words said and not said.

The magic-users still circled and stopped—alternately, in the way they did—but they didn’t seem to be watching me in quite the same way they had before. I analyzed my blade with my fingers, feeling the familiar imperfections caused from usage.

I rarely used my favorite knife, only enough to have caused a considerably small amount of damage to it, in comparison to some of my others. It certainly didn’t throw as well as it once had, as easily, or as accurately. It was damaged, to be sure, but it was not useless. And it would always be my favorite.

I did not look directly at one of the circlers coming toward me. Not as he moved closer. Not even when he stopped and said, “You could have killed her.”

“I would not have thrown the blade if I had no faith in my own skill,” I informed him. “I’ve been throwing blades since I was a child. I’m more than aware of what I’m doing and the extent of my capabilities.” I would’ve gone closer to her head if I hadn’t been away from my blades for so long. Skills of that nature required consistent upkeep for you to be at your best.

I still did not look at him when he very hesitantly asked, “How are you not afraid of her? Caliese.”

“She is very kind,” I stated. Amongst other things.

“But what she can do . . .”

I did look at him to say, “Has nothing at all to do with her person. Which you would know, if you knew her.”

“Are you not tempted at all?” he nearly whispered. I had no idea what he was speaking of until he gestured at the knife in my hands.

Are you not tempted at all to use that, perhaps on me?

“Not in the slightest,” I replied.

“How can you not be?”

It took me a moment to say, “Because I am as good as dead.”

“You’re wearing on her last remaining patience,” I heard from the doorway beside me. “She may appreciate you speaking to her later, but now is not the time.”

The random warlock went about his circling, then a hand appeared in front of my face. I looked up and saw him staring down at me.

Carsten, I told myself. He had a name that I’d not wanted to use all this time.

I took his hand to allow a pull up, and then I released it immediately after standing before following him back inside.

He’d prepared dinner, for which I was grateful, having eaten nothing since breakfast with him earlier. The two of us sat down at the table together in another awkward silence.

“I’m sorry that your fun day was ruined,” he said eventually after swallowing a bite of food.

I glanced over at him beside me and, for that moment I was looking, felt some sort of feeling flying through my torso.
