Chapter Twenty-Nine

Detective Dylan Brady sat in his car at a stop light, eyes scanning the sidewalk and other cars while he waited for the signal to change. The ‘90s pop music streaming from his phone through the car’s audio system abruptly stopped, replaced by his ringtone. The phone showed a Washington, DC, area code. The FBI!

He clicked a button on his steering wheel to answer the call. “Hi, this is Detective Brady.”

“Sir, this is the FBI following up on your request for a voice identification.”

“Yes, thank you. What have you found?”

A car horn behind made him look up to see a green light and an empty intersection ahead of him. He pulled through and into the first parking lot he found.

“We got a hit on your audio. It’s from a man who lives in Chicago. Ward Lewis. I’ll email you his demographics. We found no priors in the national crime database.”

“Great, thanks so much. My chief will be thrilled.”

“Very good, sir, have a great day, and be safe out there.”

Dylan ended the call and turned his car to head back to the precinct. It was time to look into Ward Lewis and bring him in for questioning.

Jon was still sitting at his desk, per usual when Dylan arrived at his office.

“You’re sure out and about a lot, Dylan. What’s got you so excited today?”

“The FBI got a hit on that voicemail for my abduction case. It’s a guy named Ward Lewis from Chicago. I’m going to look into him online and then see if the Chicago PD will help me bring him in for questioning.”

“Want company on your road trip? I haven’t been to Chicago in a while, and your case sounds fascinating. All of mine are pretty mundane at the moment.”

“Three hours in a car with you? Sounds amazing…” Dylan let his voice taper off as he focused on his computer screen.

He entered the man’s name into a search engine and found a few pertinent results.

“It’s not just that. I’ll support you in front of those CPD boys. Then we can play good cop, bad cop with your person of interest.”

“Actually, that sounds more appealing. Looks like this guy is a budding author. He has a few thriller books out, and his bio page says he was born and raised in England. Moved over here ten years ago.”

“I guess that explains the British accent,” said Jon. “So he’s a thriller author and is a person of interest in an abduction where the victim was made to look like a missing person from two decades ago? That sounds like the plot to a great book, actually.”

“Maybe our author got too wrapped up in his work and wanted a closer perspective on things. I’m going to reach out to CPD with what we have and see if they’ll put him in a room for us.”

“Sounds good. My grandfather fought alongside the British in World War II—tough dudes. Not to mention the civilians who resisted years of bombings and kept on living. You may need to be on top of your interrogation game with this one.
