Chapter Thirteen

It was about an hour later, we were maybe thirty miles west the city. I could fly faster than thirty miles an hour, but I wanted to go slow enough to memorize teleport locations. I figured another half an hour and we’d be set for tomorrow, and could go enjoy lunch, and I could apologize for knocking Jareth on his ass.

My pocket said in Sia’s voice, “There is a group of ten men approaching the river four miles east of the city. They aren’t dressed in enemy armor, and look like bandits, but I estimate they are probably one of those strike forces you asked me to look out for. Their armor and weapons are a little too well cared for, and there is a mage in the group who has started to levitate his group over the river one by one.”

Gerard said, “There are only small patrols right now, until tomorrow anyway, we should check it out.”

I took out the communicator and thanked Sia, put it away, and teleported to what I thought a likely place for four miles east of the city. We looked east and west along the riverbank, and I smiled grimly when we saw them about a half a mile away. Not perfect, but close enough, and we started to fly in that direction.

At least in this I had no doubts. Strike teams were worse than bandits. They didn’t care about coin. All they cared about was doing damage to infrastructure, raping and pillaging, and burning crops and farmsteads. The small teams were meant to create as much havoc as possible behind enemy lines. They were also independent from the officers, which meant they were vicious men who would choose that sort of thing. Just to be sure, I used telepathy when we reached a quarter mile away, and verified they were very much a strike team.

Gerard started casting a spell, while I decided if there was only ten I didn’t have to wait to get close enough to use telekinesis, and I just psychically burned out their minds with hard telepathic punches. Nine of the ten dropped dead, the tenth of course was a mage with a shield, and we closed the distance quickly.

Gerard’s spell went off, and suddenly I could feel the mages mind, and struck out at it. He fell without sound.

It was easy, too easy. Without doubts about the strike team anyway, I wondered if a large group of normal soldiers wouldn’t have caused my abilities to misfire. I needed to get over this but…

What was the saying? Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely? Something like that. That’s what I was really afraid of. Enid, or one of the truly powerful mages, witches, or clerics could probably stop me, but there weren’t too many of those. I shook off the dark thoughts.

“Thanks, dispel magic right?”

I’d never thought about using it in battle to take down a mage shield, because the prayer spell took longer to cast than it would
