It is also common for daughters to identify with their fathers, and to become in some ways like their fathers, and for sons to become like their mothers. The questions: ‘What is male’ and ‘What is female?’ do not have obvious answers, nor do they simply focus on a subject’s genitals, as we will see in the chapter on feminine sexuality. Human sexuality is not ‘a given value’, a thing of fixed meaning but something that is a part of the infinite diversity of culture and language. Sexuality therefore has a symbolic value, and is more determined by language than the genital type.
