Boy, is that new Labrador puppy cute! And boy, is having a new puppy difficult! New puppies are indeed a challenge. The first few weeks with a new puppy aren’t unlike the first few weeks with a newborn human. You probably won’t get much sleep, you’ll spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning up, and you’ll sometimes think the unthinkable: “What on earth have I gotten myself into?”

Puppies do lots of things you probably don’t care for. They whine and cry when you’d rather be in dreamland. They use the world as their toilet. They treat your fingers like chew toys. And oh, the energy! Just watching a Lab puppy can give you an overwhelming desire to take a nap. Can you manage all that behavior? No problem. Start out with easy management steps before you move on to relationship (Chapter 9) and training aspects (Chapter 10) to further develop and refine the behaviors you desire.
