Chapter Sixteen

Warehouse

After ten minutes of cautious driving mixed with erratic speeding whenever they thought there was some pursuit, the car pulled to a stop in a secluded alley on the other side of town. Maria took off with the bag of money, saying that she would return in the morning (‘these things don’t happen overnight, y’know – unless you’re me, of course’) while Katy and Archie parked Maria’s beat-up car in a darkened spot and fell asleep.

The next morning they were awoken by a tapping on the car window. Both of them nearly jumped out of their skin, until they realized that it was Maria.

‘Time for us to go house-hunting,’ she smiled, holding up a white envelope in her hand.

She got into driver’s seat after Archie let her in, and she emptied the envelope whilst they sorted their appearances out.

‘Checking account, debit card, certificate of ownership,’ she said, handing everything to Archie as he looked at it all in disbelief.

‘How the hell did you do this?’ Archie asked, shaking his head. ‘This isn’t how money works in this day and age. The government can track everything.’

‘Archie, my dear boy,’ Maria said in a mock-patronizing voice, ‘I’ve been getting into more trouble than I have a right to be in since I could walk. I’m good with computers, numbers and I know a lot of people – particularly considering when I look like this.’ She ushered her hands up and down her body. Archie couldn’t disagree.

‘Honestly,’ Katy said from the back, ‘Where does the confidence come from?’

‘Take some pride in yourself, Katy. You’re hotter than I am.’

‘I don’t know if I’d say that. I just don’t talk about it.’

Maria was much feistier than Katy – the latter was the well-rounded girl-next-door that he had known since starting college.

‘Let’s focus on the task at hand,’ Archie laughed, holding a hand up. ‘There are hundreds of warehouses on the outskirts for sale. We just need to choose one of them.’

‘I’m gonna return to the issue that was brought up yesterday morning,’ Katy said sarcastically, holding up her hand like a democratic politician. ‘Even if we get hunkered down in this place, how the hell are we going to make sure that the Hand of Balance don’t find us? They can still find you with that asshole-ish concoction of theirs.’

‘I told you. It’ll be our home, but until they’re defeated I won’t spend long there.’

‘Until they’re defeated?’ Maria said. ‘And when will that be?’

‘I’ve barely had enough time to think about any of this since it started, so I’ll be real with you – I’m just making this up as I go along. Like anybody I grew up wondering what it would be like to be the Reveneer, thinking about what I would do, how my life would be… But now that I’m here the reality is much different. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved every second of this so far. But I need to make sure that we stay safe and don’t get picked off less than a week into wherever this adventure takes us.
