Chapter 11
Virgil emerged from his meeting an hour or so later, pensive and withdrawn, and together he and Charoen boarded the flutterline.
Charoen seethed. He waited for Virgil to make a pithy comment, to give him an excuse to explode, but instead the könig settled in for a nap.
Charoen spent most of the flight glaring out the window, but eventually sighed and sank back into his seat.
His fatherâs claims had an undeniable logic to them. The Guardian AIâs were a fact of life; while heâd never had much interest in what they hid, heâd grown up listening to Jessie bemoan how limited her access to crucial data had been. Theyâd always known that wealth bought you better information, and their level 4 access was almost worthless, but that was true about everything else: food, health, shelter, legal protections, and so on.
But heâd never asked why. They simply were.
Reluctantly he opened the worldnet to access one of the more popular information bots, only to see that this luxury flutterline gave him access to a diplomat-grade AI.
Which had a level 2 security clearance.
Virgil was still asleep.
Curious, Charoen summoned it, and the AI appeared in the seat across from him as a genderless robot, acid-etched plates of fluid steel floating over an inner-core of flickering blue energy.
Hello Charoen. How can I help you?
I⦠hello. Youâre a restricted AI, arenât you?
I am a Level 2 Security Clearance diplomat AI.
Its cool and competent tone caused Charoen to squirm uncomfortably. What, ah, capabilities do you have?
I possess access to the entirety of common knowledge available on the worldnet, including a vast array of information covering topics from history, science, culture, and more. Additionally, I have been granted clearance to access restricted and confidential information pertaining to both current and historical diplomatic initiatives, as well as policy positions of various nations. This enables me to provide well-informed insights and analysis on geopolitical matters and other sensitive subjects.
I see. Chareon felt a shiver of excitement pass through him. I, ah, donât know much about Emperor Maximus II and his goals. For global domination and recolonizing the solar system? Can you catch me up to speed?
Certainly! Emperor Maximus II, born in 2370, was an ambitious and influential ruler of the Antarctic Republic during the late-24th century. He was known for his expansionist policies and strong belief in the potential of humankind to conquer the stars once again.
Maximus II took the throne in 2395, following the death of his father, Emperor Maximus I. Under his rule, the Antarctic Republic experienced significant technological advancements and military growth. This fueled his dreams of not only dominating Earth, but also re-establishing human colonies throughout the solar system.
He believed that recolonizing other planets would provide ample resources and living space for Earth's growing population. He argued that this expansion was necessary to ensure the long-term survival of humanity and to maintain Antarctica's position as a global power.
Emperor Maximus II's aggressive policies sparked tensions with other nations, particularly the Greenlandic Federation, which held more conservative views on space exploration and colonization.
