Chapter 9

Koren

THOUGH THE DATE HAD been wildly successful, Koren was home by eight. After kissing Chay senseless at his door, Koren went home and called Amar, just as he’d promised to do.

Edgar picked up the phone. “Koren, please tell me you’re calling to say you can’t talk long because your boy toy is in the shower waiting for you?”

Koren chuckled. “Hi, Edgar. How are you?”

“Don’t change the subject. Is he in the shower?”

An image of Chay in the shower, touching his cock as he pictured Koren watching, made Koren groan. “Our date ended ten minutes ago. He’s at home.”

“One floor below you.”

“Edgar, we’re taking it slow, just like you and Grange did. We’re getting to know each other.”

On the other side, Edgar groaned. “We didn’t go slow on purpose. We went slow because Amar didn’t think fooling around with his assistant was a good way to treat an employee. You don’t have that issue.”

Edgar had a point, but Koren wasn’t holding back because he wanted to. “Chay wants to be courted, and I’m going to make sure he gets what he wants. We had fun, and I’m seeing him again on Tuesday.”

“Why not tomorrow?” Edgar pressed.

“I have to work tomorrow morning, and he has to work in the evening.” Koren fully expected to show up at Chay’s place the second he returned home. If nothing else, they could make out. “Edgar, I called to talk to Granger. Is he available?”

Though he only heard Edgar’s sigh, he had no trouble picturing Edgar’s long-suffering rolling of the eyes. “He’s right here, and for the record—he agrees with me.”

Amar’s voice came on the line next. “Hey, Koren. How are you?”

“Your omega is very opinionated.”

Laughing, Amar agreed. “He’s a staunch romantic.”

So, it seemed, was Chay. For the first time in his life, Koren was looking forward to romancing a man in order to win his heart. But that wasn’t why he’d called. “Tomorrow, we’ll listen to Tito, and then we’ll take steps to make sure our interests are protected.”

They spent the next couple hours discussing how to counter Tito’s likely response to the new restrictions on his behavior.

The next morning, Koren sat through a general meeting welcoming Tito back from his “sabbatical.” Most of the beings that worked at DI were not shifters, and Zeke had covered for Tito’s absence by saying that he’d taken personal leave. The woman introducing Tito hailed him as a great leader, and Draco International employees cheered when he took the stage.

Sitting in the rear of the auditorium with Amar on one side, Zeke on the other, and Eli on the opposite side of Amar, Koren breathed to control his conflicted emotions as Tito talked about the importance of family and how DI was like one huge family. All-in-all, it was the kind of speech that left listeners feeling good about themselves and the state of the world even though nothing substantive had been communicated. The foursome retired to Zeke’s office in the basement as soon as the gathering concluded.
