The Manic Goblin
This story is about a forgetful goblin.
Once upon a time, there was a child. The child was very poor and lonely because his parents died right after he was born. One day, the child went to the neighboring town to work, and met a little boy about his age on his way back home over the mountain.
“Mr. Kim! Mr. Kim!” the little boy called after the child, clapping his hands twice. The little boy was a goblin. When goblins meet a person, they call out “Mr. Kim!” twice, and clap their hands.
The child was very surprised to meet the goblin. However, if you show surprise when seeing goblins, the goblins feel bad and will do something mean. So, the child pretended to be calm.
“Why did you call me?” he asked.
The goblin responded, “I do not have money right now, so please lend me some—just three pennies.”
The child only had three pennies. However, if he did not give him this money, it was clear that the goblin would do something mean to him. So, the child gave the goblin the money and said, “You’re sure to pay back this money, right?”
“Of course. I’ll pay you back tomorrow evening, so don’t worry,” the goblin said. He then disappeared without a trace.
Now without money, the child had to skip dinner.
The next day, the child went to another house to work. After he returned home, somebody called him saying, “Mr. Kim! Mr. Kim!” clapping twice. When the child went outside, the goblin he had met yesterday came to him with three pennies.
“I came here to pay back the three pennies I borrowed yesterday. Here they are.” The goblin gave the child the three pennies, and again disappeared without a trace.
The next evening, someone called the child outside saying, “Mr. Kim! Mr. Kim!” When he went out, the goblin was there again.
“I came here to pay you back the three pennies I borrowed yesterday. Here they are.” The goblin gave him the three pennies again.
The child asked, “Didn’t you already pay back the money you borrowed yesterday?”
The goblin then answered, “When did I pay you back? How could I pay you back since this is the first time I’ve seen you after I borrowed three pennies from you yesterday?” and disappeared.
As it turns out, goblins are forgetful of things like this. But the child was happy because he got money again for nothing.
The next evening, someone called the child outside saying, “Mr. Kim! Mr. Kim!” When he went out, the goblin had come again. “I came here to pay you back the three pennies I borrowed yesterday. Here they are.” The goblin gave him the three pennies again.
After that, the goblin came to his house every evening and gave him three pennies each time. The child became very rich.
A few months later, the goblin came again to pay back the money and asked, “Can I hang out in your house just for a moment?”
The child told the goblin to come in. While hanging
