CHAPTER 12

Those moments where you jerk awake, but never remembering falling asleep; I had one of those. I checked my paws. Yup two opposable thumbs. I had my claws back, but no weapon. I would need to build an NPC kit among many other things. I checked my inventory. I must have ESPN or something because I predicted this. My inventory was empty. So was my personal coin account. However, I had a Jeeni account. Bonus! There was five gold in it.

“Excuse me, Mr. Innkeeper,” a timid voice from right behind me said.

I shrieked and spun on my stalker.

My eyes landed on a disheveled mother holding a babe. The little girl clung to her mother with tired droopy eyes. There was a group of humans behind her. Each and every one of them appeared so pitiful in their ragged clothing I wanted to shout. No, I had this. Help was on the way. There would be at least a few people who saw the Jeeni thread.

“What are your current tasks?” I asked.

“We have none. You’re the acting mayor,” the woman said. I inspected her. Jodi, no husband, five children. Yup, she was from Texas.

“Jodi, you are going to be the child watcher. Which of you can fight?” I asked with a raised voice. No hands went up, and no one stepped forward. “Okay, here are your orders. Clean your homes. When that is done start digging a well. If you find yourself without a task, start gathering wood for a fire. Pile the wood outside the market. No one bothers me for an hour. Get to work.”

I hoped my most convincing tone was enough. I counted people as they left to accomplish the task I had set. Honestly, a koala was woefully unprepared to manage a city. I needed a mayor. Telling people to clean their own homes was akin to telling a child to pick up after themselves.

I walked to the market. I was greeted by a prompt.

Welcome, Innkeeper Rang3rDang3r of The Frothy Mouth. You have complete access to the market as an NPC mayor.

I waited for a prompt asking for me to confirm something. Nope. A search bar opened when I removed the initial greeting. I input shovel.

Seventeen thousand items came back. There were treasure shovels, crypt shovels, and more. I refined my search to digging shovel. Fifteen thousand results. Uh… Okay. I went from cheap to most expensive. Five copper was the cheapest. The description read.

Level one digging shovel. Each scoop of dirt has a 35% chance to break -

I closed that option. I rotated the search. I was surprised I didn’t find thousands of leone shovels selling for millions of gold to try to trick someone. I did find a level twenty eight shovel for twenty gold.

.0005% chance to break

I searched around until I found a level seven shovel for a silver. Five percent chance of breaking. I bought five. The market dinged giving me a tab to open. I selected transfer items. The shovels appeared in my inventory, each having a little icon symbol.
