Chapter 12

The next day I wasn’t due at the hotel until the six to midnight shift. I knew my honey was going to be at work during the first half of the day at Old Man’s Garage. So I was inspired to bring him lunch. Up to this point, all the meals we had shared have been on him. I thought it was high time he sampled something I literally brought to the table. And it would be good practice for me to go into Winona and wear away the axes I bear against that town on behalf of my family.

It might have made me a hypocrite, but I wanted to look sexy for him and to achieve that, my first go-to was a pair of frayed hem, faded blue, tight denim jeans. I wore a pristine white V-neck t-shirt, and a black denim jacket. I sported leather aviator boots. I drew my hair up into a single, very long, high ponytail. I looked like a biker chick. I had to admit, if anyone knew sexy, biker chicks did. I dabbed the back of my ears with my soft powdery perfume – a secret weapon in my estimation.

For lunch, I made him some of the dishes my mother used to make for my dad. He adored her for simple things like cooking. Because it was lunch, I made fried apples, which were really apple slices with a touch of sugar and vanilla sautéed in butter until they were tender. I smeared a little really good mayo on half a buttered, sliced baguette. I stuffed the bread with shredded roasted chicken, seasoned only with salt and pepper. My mother swore that all you needed for good chicken was to roast it in olive oil and salt and pepper, with the skin on, of course. I did all of that. The only thing I added to the sandwich that my mom did not were onion slices I had pickled overnight in balsamic. I also added sliced Campari tomatoes from our garden. It was late in the season but our plants were still producing.

I wrapped the sandwich in parchment and tucked it in my dad’s lunchbox. I already asked my mom, and she said it was okay. Along with the fried apples, I included two peanut butter butterscotch chip cookies that I made as well. I whipped up the batter the night before and let it chill. I baked a batch first thing in the morning and let them cool until I was ready to pack. I took the rest and another batch to set out for the rest of the guys – and gals – who worked at the shop with Theodore. I thought it’d be nice to share. I texted my mom, who knew I was bringing Theodore a surprise lunch, that I was off.

I didn’t mind keeping in touch with her that way. She backed off on her overprotection, and I came to her, and things were working much better between us.
