CHAPTER 20

I called Crusher as soon as I got home. “You were right to warn me about Steven Abbas.” I told him about the veiled threat I’d received. “How does he know about my personal life?”

“You didn’t tell him about Poppy’s visit to the Halabys, did you?”

A wave of nausea flew through me. “I didn’t have to. Marwan Halaby called and told Abbas himself. Since Abbas already knows, should you postpone Poppy’s visit today?”

Crusher grunted. “Too late. We’re already there. Don’t worry. I’m with Malo and two federal agents.”

Of course I would worry, but I wasn’t about to argue the point with him. “Did Sonia go too?”

“No. Bringing Sonia would’ve complicated the mission. Too many possible targets to protect. I’ll text you when the bird is safely back in the nest again.”

“Wow. I love it when you talk spy talk.”

He chuckled. “Papa bear over and out.”

After ending the call, I desperately wanted to drive back to the Halaby house, now that I knew where they lived, and plead for them to take their granddaughter. Instead, I changed into my size 16 stretch denim jeans and a T-shirt and invited my best friend, Lucy, over for lunch. She arrived a half hour later, wearing her size 8 jeans with a crease ironed down the front of the leg and a green turtleneck sweater. As usual, she appeared impeccably put together. I sighed. I’d never fit into size 8, even if they put me on an inquisitor’s rack and stretched me to seven feet long.

We sat in the kitchen eating tuna sandwiches while I brought her up-to-date and told her about Steven Abbas’s threat.

Lucy put down her sandwich. “Okay, girlfriend. You see where this is going? You’re about to get yourself into ‘dangerous waters’ once again.” When she used finger quotes to emphasize her words, I knew a lecture was coming. “You need to back off before someone gets hurt.”

“Believe me, you don’t need to tell me twice. I swear I’m not going to dig any further. I’m going to let the FBI do their job.”

My friend raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Uh-huh.”

We moved to the sewing room, where Lucy worked on her Snail’s Trail blocks while I finished the little quilt Poppy started. I spread out the pastel plaid fabric she’d chosen for the quilt back on the cutting table right side down. Next, I layered a piece of batting. Finally, I laid the patchwork on top and smoothed it over the batting to make a three-layered quilt sandwich. I pinned the layers together with safety pins every four inches in horizontal rows to keep the layers from slipping while I stitched them.

Lucy looked up from her sewing. “Will the Halaby grandparents take Poppy?”

“It seemed to me the grandmother really wants her. Amina enjoys a lot of influence with her husband. But I’m pretty sure he holds the final say.”

I turned back to my sewing machine, threaded it with green thread, and joined everything together, removing the safety pins as I came upon them.
