When the workshop ended, there was free time. After Crystalâs comment about at least finishing one of the fingerless gloves during the weekend, a couple of the retreaters wanted to continue on with their knitting. Crystal apologized, but said she had to go. The truth was she was only obligated for the hour.
âWeâre going to have our own stitch and sip,â Leslie Ackroyd said as she and her husband left for the café. I caught a glimpse of their work as they packed it into the red tote bags and was surprised at the quality of their knitting. Or more correctly, lack of quality. The stylish couple had passed themselves off as being experienced knitters. I began to have the feeling that their Stitch and Sip get-togethers were heavier on the sip than the stitch.
Sandra wanted to sit outside and knit. She offered help to anyone who needed it, but there were no takers.
âI just want to go for a walk on the beach,â Jenn Van Ness said. âAlone,â she said, looking at her daughter. Emily seemed upset with what her mother had said and watched as Jenn walked out the door.
âWe were never that close. I really hoped weâd connect more this weekend.â She waited until her mother had cleared the area and she went to join Sandra. I felt for her and suddenly felt more kindly about my motherâs phone calls.
Mary Smith patted her computer bag and said she was going to the café. The only one who showed any interest in the staged crime scene was Rose Wilburn. But when I followed her to offer some help, she only seemed interested in moving things around and taking pictures. My first instinct was to tell her not to touch anything. But then reality struck and I remembered that it wasnât real.
The only ones whoâd decided to stay in the room were Madeleine and Milton Carruthers. She was looking at her work and seemed a little lost. I considered offering to help her. My skills werenât great, but better than hers. I knew that I wasnât supposed to be acting like her ladiesâ maid or anything, but I felt responsible for her. Even if it was for something like wanting extra towels.
I was about to offer my services when Milton Carruthers slid into the empty seat next to her.
âIâm not sure I could be much help,â he said in a friendly voice. âBut maybe we can figure it out together. It might be the blind leading the blind, but Iâm willing if you are. At least we might have fun.â
Madeleine looked at the man next to her as what heâd said sunk in. He wanted to spend time with her and heâd just offered her fun. Instantly, she became girlish and flipped back her hair in a flirtatious manner. I admired how natural it was considering her sheltered life. Maybe it was just a talent you were born with, or you werenât. Milton seemed to be charmed by it and leaned a little closer.
