Chapter Nine

Meadow said, “Well. I’m just not sure what to think about any of this.”

“I know,” said Beatrice. “At least Fletcher seemed to be in better shape emotionally when he left.”

“I mean I don’t know what to think about the fact that he wants to move from Dappled Hills. Can you imagine? I think he should just put the house for sale and then find another spot to live. Dappled Hills is the best!” She frowned. “Do you think he’s the kind of guy who might fit into our quilting guild? Ash is practically an honorary member now and I’d really like to grow our male membership.”

Beatrice’s head started hurting. “Meadow, I really don’t think this is the best time to engage in guild recruitment. Fletcher obviously has a lot on his mind right now and maybe it would be best for him to get a fresh start somewhere else, like he was saying.”

“Bad man,” offered Miss Sissy. She had cookie crumbs dotting the top of her long, floral dress.

Meadow said, “Is this about the argument you said he had with Edie again? Because you know every couple fights, don’t you?”

Miss Sissy glowered at her. She might well have not known this since she’d never found quite the right man to settle down with.

Meadow persisted, “It’s true. Why, Ramsay and I argued this morning over whose turn it was to walk Boris. And it was most definitely his turn. I know Ramsay keeps talking about retirement, but I wonder what I’m going to do with him at home all day long. I mean, I love Ramsay. I do! But I simply don’t want to spend all day with him.” She frowned and looked at her watch. “Goodness. I believe it’s time for me to walk Boris now. The vet has him on a special diet and exercise regimen. I’m doing so much walking, though that I’m starting to feel like I’m the one on the diet.”

“Has Boris gained that much weight?” asked Beatrice. She’d seen their huge beast of a dog just a few days earlier but had been mainly focused on the animal’s dirty paws at the time since Boris appeared to be aiming them at her clean khakis.

Meadow sighed. “I’m afraid so. I do believe it may have something to do with Will’s affection for Cheerios cereal. I’m starting to wonder if Will isn’t dropping those Cheerios from his highchair on purpose. He does tend to squeal and laugh hysterically when he does it.” Meadow looked thoughtful.

“Supper?” asked Miss Sissy with a hopeful lilt to her voice. Meadow was now cooking and bringing supper several times a week to both Piper and Ash and Miss Sissy after they’d discovered Miss Sissy ate nothing but greens of various sorts when she wasn’t getting meals. Although Beatrice was beginning to think that diet of greens might be responsible for Miss Sissy’s longevity and lack of pressing health issues.

“Absolutely! It’s fish bake tonight. And you two remember the guild meeting tomorrow, please.
