CHAPTER 4

Jonah

Late April 1985

Lying on my back, I’m working the wrench above me on the car that is currently the bane of my life. It’s making knocking noises for its owner and I’ve been trying to figure out from where all day long. I think I’ve finally narrowed it down. As I’m working on it, I’ve been listening to Erik talk as he works on the car next to me. He’s a different sort. His family is part of that group that lives up on the mountain and rarely comes down. People in town don’t know what the fuck to think of them. He’s a good guy and a hard worker. When I bought Dad out of the shop a few months ago, I hired Erik, Wyatt, and Mitch on the day I took over. Grant and Jackson both got other shit they’re doing. I know we’re barely adults in the eyes of the law, but most of us have been adulting for a lot of years already. Hell, I’ve been working here since I was twelve. How we all managed to graduate from high school still surprises me.

I keep working, only half-listening to Erik. He catches my attention when he talks about his sister. I’ve only seen her from a distance once, and she was fucking gorgeous then. She wasn’t a stick like so many of my friends like. No, not at all. Her body reminded me of Ann Wilson of Heart. Curves and plenty of them. I like women like I like the roads. I want to ride on both with curves that can kill a man.

“I’m just worried. The closer we get to her finishing school, the more Father demands she spends time up the mountain. She doesn’t want to live up there, and I know she don’t want to marry fucking Joseph.” I roll myself out from under the car I’m working on to look at him. He’s leaning over the engine bay of the car next to me.

“Then why the fuck would she marry him if she don’t want to? When does she turn eighteen?”

He sighs like the world is on his shoulders. “’Cause Father will force her to. He’s an elder up there and everyone believes that Joseph is like a god or something. She turns eighteen in a month. We’re eleven months apart.” See what I said about a different sort? Not him so much, but his family is more than a little out there. They’re the kind that remind me of all those people who drank the Kool-Aid like seven or eight years ago. I’m still thinking over what he said while working on this car when I hear him exclaim out. “Shit!”

I roll out again from under the car to see if he’s hurt. “What’s the matter?” He’s wiping his hands fast, like he’s got places to be. “I promised my sister I’d pick her up at school today. She’s gonna be pissed!”

Just then a soft voice floats through the garage bay’s open door.
