Yaron pulled the warmblood’s last shoe and dropped its foot, flinging the shoe into a bucket. He dropped the pullers on the ground and marched away.

Riah was nowhere. She hadn’t even been to the shop in the past two days.

“Where you off to so soon?” Tam’s voice was raspier than normal as he looked up from pounding out a length of steel.

“To the lake. We’ve got to kill Craedon before she kills anyone else.”

Tam stared at him and slowly nodded, although his expression remained neutral. He probably hadn’t heard a word Yaron had said.

By the time Yaron hurried away and reached the shore of the fjord, Edgan and Paulo had already loaded their skiff with weapons and supplies and attached the charred carcass. Figow was not around.

The worry that Figow was somewhere with Riah quickly popped into Yaron’s mind, and it twisted his stomach. Figow could be plotting some kind of revenge against him, all because of Imori. But no, while Figow might want that, Riah wouldn’t. Would she?

With Edgan’s and Paulo’s assistance, he shoved the skiff into the water, and they all leapt inside. As they glided along, Yaron stepped up to the mast and raised the sail, which caught the wind with a snap.

“At least it doesn’t look like your woman is still out here trying to seduce the beast,” Edgan said, attempting to fill in for Figow’s lost banter. “I would’ve taken her up on her offer and made her mine, if I had the chance. You could always sneak out and go hunting for Craedon afterward. A night with Riah would beat out any with Imori, especially if you feel like you have to put out the lights to lay with Imori.”

Yaron’s anger surged, but Paulo kicked Edgan’s leg and shot him a dark scowl, which appeased Yaron for the moment. At least one of his friends wasn’t a buggering cretin. If either of these fools, or Figow, knew how he really felt about Riah, that he loved her and had for years, he’d never hear the end of it. Everything he did most days, he did for her or in hopes of impressing her.

Hours crawled by as they sailed, trolling the carcass back and forth across the lake while venturing farther and farther out. A swift tug pulled at the carcass and then released it. Yaron watched, waiting for something more. Similar bites occurred over the hours, but nothing was even as forceful as what Lord Alin had claimed to experience the day the hunts began.

An otter swam by, and Yaron hurled a spear at it, but the animal ducked into the water. His spear pierced the surface of the lake and disappeared for a moment but then floated up—with no blood on its tip—and bobbed gently, mocking him.

He sat in silence, brooding. His friends carried on with their never-ending jests about women and drink, like the fools they were. They tossed spears at a beaver and a few fish as well as an ice turtle, but they were unable to bring in any game.
