I’d wanted to repay the favor to Hayden, but he’d seemed happy just laying with me as we watched the moon rise outside the window. Eventually I fell into a dreamless sleep, content and safe in Hayden’s strong arms.

The sun rose and he kissed me gently. “I have to go tend to some duties, but I’ll return.”

I opened my eyes and smiled. His hair was a mess, his brown eyes warm and inviting, his face strong, with just the right amount of stubble.

“You should shower before going,” I said, kissing him and then standing up, fully naked, and started to walk toward the bathroom. I looked back, his eyes trailing me like I promised life itself. I smiled imply at him. “You have duties to tend to here, first, Sir Hayden,” I said in my most official voice, about to make it a royal decree.

I didn’t have to. He moved quickly to follow me into the hot shower, where we spent some time making sure we were both without wounds.

He left shortly after, leaving me satisfied and refreshed. I looked at the clothes in the wardrobe. There were beautiful dresses. Stuff I’d never worn, fabrics I wasn’t even familiar with, all with laces and sequins and generally shiny. I ran my hands over a couple and hesitated, whishing I’d have asked Hayden for his opinion before he left.

Finally I settled on just my pants and a t shirt, the fabric comfortable and familiar. Surrounded by all this strangeness I just didn’t know or understand, the familiarity of my clothing was a blessing.

A knock came at the door and I smiled, throwing it open, knowing Wane waited there. He looked at what I wore with surprise.

I spoke before he could ask. “I just don’t know,” I said, slightly whiny. “I don’t know how this clothing works, and I just want to be comfortable.”

“I get that,” he smiled reassuringly. I stepped aside so he could enter. “That’s why I spend more time as a falcon,” he looked around the room, admiring the detail and rich fabrics of the curtains, carpet and bedding. He headed for the wardrobe. I watched him as he dove in, examining each dress in turn.

“These are too frilly for you,” he mumbled. “You need something more modern, and softer. But with an edge!”

He turned to me, looking resolute. I laughed, then quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, I’m not laughing at you. I guess it’s nice to feel like someone gets my sense of style here. That’s why I’m more comfortable wearing the clothes you got me!”

His skin brightened with pleasure. His arms were wiry, his footing confident, his eyes sharp. It was easy to imagine him as the falcon, just as easy as it was to imagine Hayden as the bear.

He cleared his throat, as though remembering why he’d actually come here. “The High Priestess bids you join her in the council chambers,” he said.

“She does?” I said, a flutter of alarm in my chest.

“Just to talk,” Wane said, “and you don’t have to go.
