Chapter Fourteen

Several days later, Chaz opened the car door for Mandy to exit. He had rearranged things so that his parents were flying back in early from a trip to India to welcome their first grandchildren. His sister was on a flight right behind them on a long trek from Australia. As soon as he settled Mandy into his home, he would make it to the airport to pick them up.

As she cradled one baby in her arms, she protested, “You can’t just kidnap me and take me to a whole new …”

He repositioned the other two babies in his arms, then led her to the front door of a sprawling house that stole her breath. A woman with a creamy complexion, a pixie cut and a bright smile came to the door.

The heavy oak slab opened to a magnificent foyer that was all bright light with no shadows, just warmth. The open concept floor revealed a stunning kitchen beyond the modern living room with a huge island and breakfast nook. Gleaming hardwood reigned throughout the elegant space.

She stood rooted to the spot, with the baby in her arms, taking in her surroundings. “Wow, this is—”

“Where you’ll be staying until you say different,” he finished, handing the babies to the other two women who came forward to help.

“I have my own house, Chaz,” she said. “And a nursery.”

“I know, my love, and that was perfect for one child, but there are three.” He dipped his chin toward his arms. “And you’ll need help and more space.”

“Then I’ll get another house,” she protested, seeming almost panicked.

“But until that time, here, with a chef, a housekeeper, and a nanny, is where you’ll call home.”

Nita Samms, Karen Burns, and Soneni Pollard, who arrived before them, all appeared at the door, then Karen then accepted the baby from Mandy’s arms and passed it to Nita.

Mandy glared at him, her soft brown eyes flashing with fire. “You’re not even giving me a choice?”

The two of them were still near the colder side of the threshold because she refused to move past the foyer.

“If you’d like me to take everything and everyone and pack them up and move back to your place, so be it.”

Silence descended between them for so long, he didn’t think she would answer. He had been inside her place when he tried to prepare for her homecoming. Quaint. Small. Perfect for a single woman. A single woman with three babies? Not so much.

Chaz sighed, realizing that she was not going to give him what he wanted. “Everyone, come and grab your things, we’re moving camp.”

The women padded toward them. “Seriously?” Karen said. “You mean that dollhouse we just came from?”

“Yes,” he said, keeping his gaze on Mandy.

Three other pairs of eyes went to her. She hated to admit “that dollhouse” was almost accurate.

“Chaz, this isn’t fair,” she huffed. “You could at least ask me. Don’t make plans for my life without me.”

Duly chastised he said, “Understood.”

“Are we staying or going?” Soneni asked.
