Chapter 16

Nice idea, but sleep eluded Nic. By the time Asha had dropped her home, and she’d gone through the usual inquisition from Ma about where she’d been and who she’d been with, her eyes were almost closing of their own volition. Asha had given her a sympathetic smile, but abandoned her all the same.

The bed that had welcomed her into its soft folds the previous night was too soft now, claustrophobic in its clinging embrace. She threw off the thick quilt, letting the air get to her skin, then her scars began to itch.

She resisted the urge to scratch, but it kept her wide awake, the effort almost too much to bear. To distract herself, she ran over all the places she’d listed as possibilities for Hazel’s prison. The main contenders were an old warehouse out on the Moira Road and an abandoned barn by the side of the motorway. She wondered if Lonnie would come to the same conclusions, and that brought her thoughts around to Inspector Ram.

He’d aged that day. What must it have been like, to have lost his daughter not once, but twice? Was that how Ma and Dad felt? Now he’d taken Hazel, she was beginning to get an inkling of what her family must have experienced when she’d gone missing. How Ram must be feeling. A tear trickled down her cheek.

At some point in the night she must have slept, because she woke to the vibration of the brick phone on her bedside table. Disoriented, it took her a moment to focus on the LED display of her old-fashioned clock radio. Three thirty. She patted the table, looking for the heavy little rectangle of plastic, but only succeeded in knocking it to the ground. Fuck.

She fumbled for the light switch and blinked, dazzled by the low-power bulb in her bedside lamp. The phone, of course, had bounced. She couldn’t see it until she got all the way out of bed and dropped to her knees. It was right under the bed. By then, she was wide awake, but with a thumping headache and a dry mouth.

She slipped back under the covers, skin pebbled by the early morning chill in her room. It was a new text.

Too late for that. Last time U told the cops. Shame.

She sat up in bed, cheeks burning. No! No! She hadn’t told them — they’d followed her. Her fingers groped for the buttons to send a reply, but her hand shook too much. She put the phone down and made herself take deep breaths until the panic subsided a little.

On the second attempt, she managed to type. I didn’t tell them. They followed me. No police now. I just want my sister back safe.

She hit send, but continued to grip the phone like a lifeline until her fingers tingled with pins and needles. The screen went dark and remained that way. She checked the little battery symbol, worried it had run out of charge, but it showed almost full.
