Back home, Lenore appeared for only a few moments before flickering out of view.
Tessa was sad to see her sister disappear like that. She knew that Lenore was still around, but it wasnât quite the same as being able to talk to her and hug her. Ginger seemed to know how she was feeling, because she stood up, stretched, and then rubbed against Tessaâs leg before jumping into her lap. She turned in a circle a couple of times before settling down, purring loudly. Tess absently stroked her silky hair.
âShe sure is pretty,â Liam said. âShe reminds me of the brindle pit bull that I had when I was younger.â
âShe does,â Betty agreed. âI was sad when Zeus died.â
âMe too. But he was sixteen, which is a ripe old age for a dog his size,â Liam said.
Major was apparently feeling a little bit left out, because he got up and laid his head on Bettyâs leg, looking up at her with his adoring eyes.
âYes, youâre my sweet baby, arenât you?â she cooed at him.
That seemed to prompt Molly and Duke into action, as she jumped into Johnnyâs lap and Duke tried to get into the chair with Liam. The antics of the animals had them all laughing in no time.
âIâve read several articles that stated that animals were the perfect cure for depression. One study showed that even watching goldfish swim around in an aquarium will increase dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. Those are the neurotransmitters that create the positive feelings,â Liam said.
âWhich makes animal therapy perfect for people who suffer from depression and other similar issues,â Betty said.
They handed out some treats to the furbabies, who contentedly chewed on them on the floor.
The four friends decided that they would leave their chart for Lenoreâs potential killer alone for now, and look at it again with fresh eyes another day. Without any evidence and only the scent of a womanâs perfume for a clue, there wasnât much they could uncover. At least for now.
Johnny ordered some Chinese food. Betty was the only one who couldnât use chopsticks â a fact that her friends teased her about all the time.
They had just finished their meal when the doorbell rang again.
âKate is out shopping and Malachi is tending to something outside,â Tessa said, as she got up.
The person who rang the doorbell was long gone by the time that Tessa opened the door. She stepped onto the porch and looked around, but didnât see anyone. There werenât even any strange cars in sight.
Then, she looked down at her feet. There was a bouquet of a dozen dead flowers laying on the stoop.
âHey guys,â Tessa called out.
The other three rushed into the foyer and stepped outside, following to where Tessaâs finger pointed.
âThereâs a note,â Johnny said.
He leaned over and carefully picked it up by the edge and flipped it over.
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING.
Like the other notes, it was written in block letters with a black marker.
âShould we call the sheriff?â Betty asked.
