After your kitten is fully immunized, speak to your vet about when she’ll need her next booster shot. Until recently, vets traditionally recommended annual booster shots for the life of the kitten. Now, depending on the vaccine, she may be protected for up to three years after her first annual booster shot. Be sure to follow the regulations in your city and state, which your vet should be aware of.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)

Recently the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Academy of Feline Medicine Advisory Panel on Feline Vaccinations issued a report that included recommendations concerning the FIP nasal vaccine. Because the vaccine has not yet been proven beneficial, neither of these two prestigious groups recom- mends it.

If you still want to have your kitten inoculated with the current FIP intranasal vaccine, she can get her first dose when she reaches 16 weeks. You’ll need to get a booster in three or four weeks and then annually. The vaccine appears to be safe, but studies disagree on how effectively it protects. If you have a multicat household, the vaccine may be helpful when used together with good kitty hygiene: Clean boxes and bowls regularly. Discuss whether your kitten needs the FIP vaccine with your vet. Chapter 9 tells you all about the disease and the rather dubious test for FIP.
