Chapter 11
âTell me again why you think this lab robbery has something to do with your grandmotherâs death.â Lukeâs hands were at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, which I appreciated. I was a careful driver myself, so it was nice that my Chevy was in good hands while Ruffles slept curled up on my lap. The naughty kitten was obviously tired from his romp around the fair.
âI donât knowâI have this strange feeling,â I answered, stroking the kitten with one finger. âI mean, no one can really tell me what Gram died from, and no one knew if she was sick. Thereâs no indication in her belongings in the house that she was. She didnât contact me to tell me anything was going on or prepare me for taking over the farm or tell me what she wanted me to do.â Of course, a part of my brain niggled at me that she might not have done that even if she did know she was sick. I told that part to shut up.
Luke shot a quick glance at me, then returned his eyes to the road. âI donât think you have to be concerned about that. I know denial is part of the grief process, but that kind of thing doesnât happen in this town. You saw how it was at the fair todayâpeople here are kind. We take care of our own. The break-in at the lab and the fact that they stole something of your grandmotherâs was a coincidence.â
Something in his tone raised my hackles. It sounded like he was talking to a child. A touch condescending. Like I was a silly kid with an outrageous notion, to be talked down and given a treat to be quiet. âI donât think Iâm being unreasonable.â A pout pushed my lips outward.
Luke pulled into the driveway and slid the car into park. âI didnât say you were. Iâm only saying I think you may be looking for answers that arenât there. Because youâre grieving.â He turned toward me and gentled his tone. âMaybe youâre feeling bad that you and your grandmother didnât have a close relationship toward the end of her life.â
Anger flared. I didnât meet his gaze. âIâm not feeling guilty. Gram was the one who always kept distance between us, not me. Look, thanks for the day at the fair. I had a nice time. And thanks for finding Ruffles. Iâll see you later.â I got out of the car and went into the house without looking back.
I heard the car door close outside, then a second one as Luke got into his truck. The engine roared, then faded as he left.
Almost immediately, I felt bad. Iâd overreacted. Luke hadnât meant to make me feel chastised. I could see that now that the conversation was over. He simply believed the people of Cedar Grove were nice. Plus, he probably thought that thinking Gramâs death could have involved foul play would cause me pain. Luke was simply trying to help me feel better.
