Chapter 6

“Dorothy had a child?” Christina echoed the question that Mia had uttered over an hour ago downstairs. They’d closed the open house, said goodbye to the choir and the stragglers. And finally, they were all upstairs in the living room, relaxing. “Wow. Just wow.”

“Of course, she couldn’t keep it. Women just didn’t back then. Especially if their husbands had been dead for over five years. She went to Boise, had the baby, and then came back, with no one the wiser.” Grans sighed. “This all makes so much more sense now.”

“Did you know about the baby?” Mia asked, wondering if this was why her grandmother hadn’t liked Dorothy’s ghost hanging around.

“We were just kids. Adele must have found the ledger notation and then kept the receipt. I can’t believe she didn’t tell me about this. She never wanted to talk about Dorothy. Not even when the rumors of her ghost being around the hospital started going through the town. If Dorothy’s actions would have come to light while she was still alive, she would have been ostracized from the community. One just didn’t have an out-of-wedlock baby back then.” Grans glanced around the room at the others. “Where are our notes from last night? Did anyone find something that was odd then but makes sense after you factor in the baby?”

“No, but we were looking at Adele’s records. Maybe there’s something in Dorothy’s. Is there anywhere that would have kept her personal belongings after she died?” Mia asked Grans.

“For twenty years? I don’t think so, dear. It’s not like she was a founding father of the town or invented something important. Normal people who die without relatives, well, their stuff just goes to Goodwill or gets thrown out.” Grans turned toward Mia. “Speaking of last requests, I have a list near the grimoire so when it’s my time, you’ll know what to do with everything. Adele’s stuff I’ll get to the historical society before anything happens to me, but my stuff, it needs special handling. I don’t want my potions getting into the wrong hands over at the coven. And you know they’ll be snooping around as soon as they announce my passing. You need to make sure you’re handling things, Mia.”

“That day is a long way away.” Mia didn’t like to think about losing her grandmother. And now, she had the responsibility of clearing out her house as well. And quickly, apparently. “Besides, maybe you should ask someone else to help. I’ll be a complete wreck if you leave me here.”

Grans reached over and patted her hand. “We all have expiration dates. Most of us just can’t read the top of the can. You’ll be fine. I have faith in you. Anyway, we’re talking about Dorothy. I wonder why she thinks she was murdered?”

“Yeah, that’s bothered me too.” Trent opened his laptop. “I have the death certificate and a record from the nursing home that shows when she passed. I wonder if the state keeps records of who was working on what days.
