“OH, oh God….” Galen held his sides, laughter rolling out over the lawn.

Ellis leveled a glare at him from the pond wall. Brat.

Still, he supposed there was humor in it, now that the Pig was safely corralled in the laundry room and no actual carnage had taken place. The afternoon sun bathed everything in a golden glow, the woods ramping up their fall colors and the lily pads starting to yellow at the edges. Ellis doubted the orange flowers would last much longer; there was a frost forecast for tonight. Thank God he had winter digs worked out.

“Molly’s going to wonder what you’re smoking, you keep this up.” He glanced up at the open doors along the first floor. “Thought she was only doing upstairs today.”

“She is.” Galen managed to suck in a breath. “She’s just finishing up Joe’s wash, but she takes any chance she gets to just air everything out. Ben texted while I was on the Skype with Barb Ryan. He’s hit a groove on his dissertation and will stay until the library closes, so we can… bounce around the place by ourselves until about ten.” The poorly controlled snicker became a new round of helpless laughter.

“At 9:01 tonight I’m taking you over my knee.” That visual made it hard to stay annoyed, but he could still pout—more or less. “You try facing down a two-story reverse wind tunnel on high without shitting yourself and see how funny it is.”

“I know, I know, I’m sorry….” Galen did seem to be making an effort to get himself under control. “It’s just… the whole parkour thing… I can picture… this little green dot all over the place…. Oh God….” He wiped at his streaming eyes with his sleeve. “Oh shit….”

“Galen, what on earth are you laughing at?” Molly approached the pond, a smile lighting her face. “Sitting out here all by yourself bursting a seam. Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m okay, Molly, sorry.” Galen pulled in a full breath for the first time in what seemed to Ellis like an hour. “I just… I….” He hid the obvious-to-Ellis and frantic search for an explanation behind another breath.

“Read a tweet?” Ellis offered, keeping his voice low enough to not carry beyond the lounge.

Galen nodded and picked up his phone from where it had fallen from his shirt pocket onto the grass. “Just something somebody tweeted. It hit the funny bone hard, that’s all.” He muffled another snicker. “You done for the day?”

“I am. I’m going home and bury myself in a good mystery story before dinner.” She ruffled Galen’s hair. “If you’re breathing again.”

“Yeah, I’m good.”

“Good.” And suddenly she noticed Ellis. “Well, hello there.”

It took every effort to not reply. Since she hadn’t screamed and seemed perfectly content to converse with the wildlife, he found it equally difficult to behave like a wild frog and actually flinch when she picked him up.

“Oh, he’s a handsome one.” She took in Galen’s tension with a smile. “I used to chase frogs and salamanders when I was a girl.
