CHAPTER

TWELVE

Decker

I can’t help but continually watch the two women at the end of the bar, laughing and carrying on as if they’ve known each other for years. At a glance, you’d find it hard to believe they just met yesterday. Adeline seems relaxed and comfortable, but I’m not sure that’s strictly thanks to the woman sitting beside her or if the added bonus of fruity mixed drinks is more of the culprit.

Adeline looks my way, her cheeks flushed from alcohol and whatever spa treatment she had this afternoon with Reece. They shared some of the details, but all I really understood was full body massage and a mud facial. Sounded off to wipe mud all over your face in the name of beauty, but who am I to argue? Both of them seemed refreshed and happy with the results, so I just went with it.

There are a few groups hanging around the bar this evening. Couples enjoying a late dinner or drinks, and a handful of guys at the bar who participated in the golf tournament nearby. I know that’s where Reece’s husband is, so I imagine he’ll return to the resort soon. He’s golfing with a few friends, all of whom seem to be on the prowl while staying here. In fact, I get this weird knot in the pit of my gut when I think about one of them hitting on Adeline. I have no claim to her. We have a mutually gratifying agreement for the course of her stay here, but that doesn’t mean that agreement is set in stone. If she wants to entertain someone else, she’s free to do so and there’s not a damn thing I could do about it.

Not that I think she would. Even if she didn’t insist she’s never had this sort of no-strings arrangement in the past, I’d be able to tell in her demeanor. She was nervous to ask for it, which, admittedly, was part of the turn-on. I liked the fact she was a combination of confidence and shyness and her eyes seemed only interested in me. Likewise, I’ve only seen her since the moment she appeared at the rehearsal dinner. There’s a heavy attraction there, yes, but there’s other things too. A kinship, if you will, and a great deal of respect, because despite coming across as someone with money when I first met her, I know there’s so much more to her.

Another bubble of laughter spills from the far end of the bar, and my feet are carrying me in their direction before I can even think about stopping. “Ladies, are we ready for another drink?” I ask, flashing Adeline a flirty grin.

“One more,” Reece proclaims, her cheeks rosy and her eyes fairly glazed over.

“Ugh, I’m going to be hungover tomorrow,” Adeline declares, yet still slides her empty glass my way.

“Yeah, but that’s okay. Totally worth it,” Reece adds. “Two more Malibu Sunsets, kind sir.”

Shaking my head, I clear away their dirty glasses and retrieve two clean ones.
