Natalie wasn’t sure if it was the effect of her unbelievably long trip from Chicago, or the fact that she hadn’t eaten since lunch, or the number of BTU’s she’d burned up simply standing in the cold waiting for her ride. Whatever the cause, Theo Bellini looked better than anything she’d set eyes on for years.

With his big frame and dark laughing eyes, he’d always struck her as a kind of merry giant. He’d always had a huge thirst for life. So had she—but her drive had been more about ambition.

“Natalie Desroches?” He was still staring at her in shock. “Aren’t you supposed to be on a TV somewhere explaining El Nino?”

“Normally I would be. But I decided to surprise Granny for Christmas.” She blinked snowflakes off her eyelashes. “Any chance I could get in?”

He shook himself out of his stupor. “Yeah, yeah, of course. That’s what I’m here for.” He reached for his door handle, but she waved him off. “I got it. I’m used to heaving gear into large vehicles.”

She opened the door to the crew cab and put her bag of presents on the back seat. The cheerful red and green and gold wrapping paper made her smile every time she looked at it. Granny was going to be so happy to see her, even if she couldn’t make out the color of the wrapping paper anymore. She slid her suitcase onto the floorboards and hopped into the front passenger seat.

Theo turned up the head and flicked on the seat heater. “You must be just about frozen.”

“This parka’s good up to fifty below zero. It’s designed for the South Pole. But yes, I’m a bit chilled around the edges.” She took off her gloves and held her hands over the heater vent. “Thanks for picking me up. I had to take extreme measures to get them to agree to consider me a package.”

“You pulled the celebrity card?” Theo steered the truck out of the parking lot and into the oncoming storm. She’d been tracking this system as she traveled across the country, and knew they were in for even more inches of snow.

“I wouldn’t go that far. Meteorologists don’t rate that kind of status. But I did promise to mention the kind people at Alaska Shipping on all my social media. Speaking of which…” She pulled out her phone and tapped out a post for Instagram.

When she finished, she saw that Theo was sending an odd smile her direction. “Damn. Natalie Desroches. It’s good to see you, even if you did bribe a shipping company to get here. In the old days, you would have bribed someone to get out.”

“Seriously, you want to start arguing already? Pick up where we left off?”

She scrunched up her face, remembering how they’d ripped into each other during their last breakup. Strangely, she couldn’t remember the topic that had triggered the fight. But it was always the same thing. His spirit of adventure versus her ambition.

“Dumb joke,” he said ruefully. “Forget it.
