Chapter Nine

It was crazy how much ten days could change your life, and yet that’s exactly how Marissa felt.

In the ten days since she and Patrick got married, she’d slept better than she had in years, felt more relaxed than she ever could remember, stopped grinding her teeth, and felt more in control of her life overall. On top of that, her mother was showing some tiny improvements—basically she stopped fighting the physical therapists and was allowing them to actually work with her—and so far, there had been no word from Daren. It was too soon to say he’d given up, but she was hopeful.

Other than her one teeny-tiny slip up of falling into bed with Patrick, everything was positive. They’d moved on from it and things were completely back to normal—the way they said it would be. He was being a total workaholic and she rarely saw him when she was home at his place.

“And that doesn’t bother me at all,” she murmured Monday morning while printing out a lease agreement for a client. Glancing at the clock, she saw it was a little after ten. Patrick was at a breakfast meeting with the town’s planning board to discuss some proposed commercial buildings. Marissa knew he was slightly against building anything new when there were so many existing structures that just needed some TLC, but she wasn’t sure he’d be able to convince the town of their potential. But if anyone could do it, Patrick could.

A little while later, she was slipping the lease into a folder when the bell over the front door rang out. Smiling, she looked up and spotted a well-dressed older man walking in. “Hi,” she said. “Can I help you?”

He approached her desk with a smile of his own. “I don’t have an appointment, but I was told Mr. Donovan was the best property manager in the area. Is he around?”

“He’s out of the office at the moment, but I can set up an appointment for you if you’d like.”

“Hmm…” He hesitated. “Wait…are you his assistant, Marissa Barrett?”

Still smiling, she replied, “I am!”

Reaching into his coat pocket, he pulled out an envelope and handed it to her. “You’ve been served.” Then he turned and walked out.

For a moment, she was too stunned to react, but when she did, it was a loud string of colorful curses.

“Rookie mistake!” she shouted and hated how there was no one there to calm her down and no one she felt comfortable enough with to call. It took several minutes for her heart rate to slow back down and for her to start to think logically.

The first thing she did was call Rob Andrews. He carefully talked her through everything and asked for her to bring the documents to his office. He promised to handle everything from there.

“But…but what if Daren shows up here and…?”

“If you’re worried, you could get a restraining order,” he suggested. “Have you talked to the police about it?”

“After the way they treated the break-in, I doubt they’ll approve my request for a restraining order.
