Chapter Fourteen

With no destination in mind, I continued to run away from the Wilson’s house, letting my feet lead me wherever they wanted to. The night air was chilly against my skin and I felt myself shiver. Visions from the incident between me and James flooded my mind, sending a wave of nausea throughout my body. I bent over and threw up on the sidewalk in front of me. For the first time in years, I wished that my dad was there to pick me up and take me home, so I could tell him that he was right all along, that there were bad guys in the world who would hurt me, and that I shouldn’t be allowed out on my own.

Cradling my head in my hands, I inhaled a gust of cool air and let it fill my lungs as I continued heading in the opposite direction of the house holding my best friend and the boy that attacked me. I walked forward without looking up and rammed right into someone.

“I’m so sorry,” I muttered and gasped in shock.

Bright green eyes stared back at me underneath the moonlit sky.

“There’s nothing to apologize for,” said one of the same voices I had heard inside the house.

With little more than moonlight illuminating the area, it was difficult to determine the color of his hair. It appeared silvery-blue, reminiscent of snow and ice. He was at least a foot taller than me, slender, and dressed in a dark coat and jeans.

“You’re not dressed for Halloween,” I commented, feeling somewhat stupid.

Somehow, that led him to smile. “All Hallows Eve is celebrated differently where I am from.”

A confused expression washed over my face. “Yeah? And where’s that?”

He shook his head, causing more locks to drift over his forehead. “It matters very little right now. We need to get you someplace safe … away from the Nefastus scum that tried to defile you.” His voice was strange, oddly accented.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, stepping back from him. “Ne — fas — tus?”

“You really don’t know, do you? What you are?”

I shook my head and turned to look behind me, assuring myself that I hadn’t been followed. “I um, look, I don’t know who or what you think I am but …” I began to back away from the stranger.

The boy grinned and seemed to be examining my face. “Judging by the color of your eyes, I would say you are a Summoner, but your abilities shown back there gave me the impression that you are a Clairvoyant.”

“A what?” The word was familiar to me. I knew I’d heard it somewhere before, but at that moment it wasn’t clicking.

“A Clairvoyant … someone that can wield the ability to see the future via premonition. They’re also known to be able to hear the thoughts of others, generally through physical contact until they’ve honed the ability to do it with their mind alone. Which leads me to wonder how you could possibly have heard me, when you say you aren’t aware of what you are.
