“I think I found a hunt,” Grady called from the next room.

Two weeks had passed since the phantom train incident. As Denny’s research had predicted, Grady’s strength returned, and his nightmares seemed to have retreated, at least for now. Dawson made good on his word to keep them both busy playing hometown tourists, which turned out to be more fun than either man expected. Best of all, they’d had plenty of time to spend in the Mustang on the open road, having the kind of conversations that only happened in a car on a long drive.

They had finally recaptured the camaraderie from before things became fraught, a side effect for which Dawson was grateful. He had intentionally not gone looking for any signs of supernatural trouble because he didn’t want to push Grady into anything—romantically or hunting-wise—before he was ready.

“Oh yeah?” Dawson looked up as Grady padded out to the kitchen, barefoot. Faded jeans clung in all the right places, and the dark T-shirt fit snugly over defined muscles. Dawson pulled his attention back to his coffee and discreetly adjusted himself.

“Ghost lights.”

Dawson sat back in his chair. “Like the Brown Mountain Lights? They’re a long way from here.” Unexplained, ghostly bobbing lights were a well-known phenomenon, but the mountain from which they took their name wasn’t close. Although they’d been called in to help other hunters from time to time, the Kings generally had their hands full just dealing with the supernatural problems in Transylvania County and the western end of the state.

“Sort of, but not.” Grady poured himself a cup of coffee, snagged a muffin off the plate on the counter, and sat across from Dawson. “They’re newer, for one thing. Reports only date back about two months. Mostly, they’ve been a curiosity or a nuisance. Drivers complained that the lights popped out of nowhere and danced around, almost causing a wreck.”

“Doesn’t exactly sound like a hunt,” Dawson replied. “Might be something natural, like foxfire. Or a plague of lightning bugs.”

“I wondered about that, but then two hikers have gone missing in that same area, just since the ghost lights showed up.”

“Did you ask if Denny knew anything about it?” Dawson feigned interest, but his mind spun, trying to figure out whether Grady was up to a hunt, even an easy one. Grady had some rough days right after the fight with the psi-vamp, and as he regained his strength, Dawson knew that the painful memories the Algos had fed from roared back with a vengeance.

Grady had nightmares—no, night terrors, Dawson corrected himself—several evenings in a row that left him pale, shaking, and throwing up. The dreams had become less frequent, with none at all in the past few days, but Dawson didn’t want to add fuel to the fire. Even easy hunts could go badly wrong.

“He said it wouldn’t hurt to check into it. I mean, it might just be a coincidence that the hikers disappeared after the lights showed up. But what if it isn’t?”

“Where is it?”

“Over on Wolf Mountain.
