EFFECTIVE PRAYER IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF CHRIST

I want to leave you with an encouraging word on prayer that I hope will spur you on to greater growth not only in your prayer life, but in every area of your Christian experience. I can’t think of a better passage to accomplish this than Hebrews 4:14–16, three power-packed verses on prayer that, ironically, were written to a group of Christians who had stopped growing and were actually regressing in their spiritual experience.

You can read Hebrews 4:1–13 to see how the author of this book warns against the dangers of unbelief and turning away from the Lord. The Hebrews were about ready to give up, but the message of the book is don’t quit, press on, and instead of drawing back in unbelief, draw near to God. It is in this context that we read:

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb. 4:14–16)
