Part Two:

King of the Castle

Chapter Nineteen

Jasper, the medic, told Kana it had been two months since that terrible, fateful night. But to the queen it didn’t feel like a whole week had passed, let alone months. She was unconscious for most of it, they said. Her body, if not her mind, was healed from the beatings.

But now it deteriorated into further weakness from lack of use. In front of her mirror, plump cheeks looked sharper than Kana remembered, and once strong arms had become scrawny. Her hip hurt, too. If she applied too much pressure by sitting or standing wrong, a deep ache throbbed in her side.

Released from the medics constant watch and holed up where she wouldn’t draw notice, Kana sat alone in her chambers. This was the third night that Jasper granted such freedom after a week of observation.

Kana was in her nightgown brushing short curls that proved time really had passed with her unaware. Two months of unconsciousness and her once waist long hair was only down past her ears. This was no elaborate trick from the king. A man she’d yet to see since her time awake.

Well, there would be no more seeking him out on Kana’s end. Trying to reason with a madman... was madness in itself. Her hair would serve as a constant reminder that Amaroq was not safe. He was a demon. Unreasonable, unlovable, and on the prowl, ever opportunistic.

When the door creaked open, Kana knew it was only a matter of time before he visited. She stood to face him. The vanity’s chair tipped back and clattered to the floor in her haste.

She knew. She KNEW. “Amaroq. M-my king?” Kana whimpered, head bowed as she backpedaled away from him.

“So you have finally awoken?” He asked, sauntering into the chambers. “Should I update you on what’s transpired since you absented yourself from the council these past months?”

As he spoke Amaroq slithered through Kana’s room and took a seat near the hearth. He was in no hurry.

Kana shook her head, pushing herself back against the furthest corner. “I don’t want to be in council, my liege.” There was an uncomfortable hollowness in Kana’s chest when she uttered such blasphemous words. But her trusted colleagues were gone, all of them.

There was no point.

“I- I don’t need to be involved in any of it. I... I don’t want to be involved.”

Even if it had been months, for Kana it seemed but a few days ago that Amaroq terrorized her beyond words. Beyond memory even, as a dark blackness hid whatever happened to Kana in the dungeons from her psyche. There was no one left to protect, except herself.

“I’ll find something else to stay entertained and out of your way.”

“Good.” He told her. “Because without your meddling, the Kingdom’s situation has improved. I brought the peasant revolution threatening to rise with my father’s reign to an end.” He said, “And as for my brother...”

Kana flinched at the mention of Nanook, wrapping her arms around herself. “Amaroq, please.” She whispered.
