Chapter 17

Interloper 53

Argo

Once they collected the survivors from Clobalt, Argo told Varric where to teleport them in Yerevir. Thankfully, Zaiya had shown them the outer courtyard during her tour, because Argo didn’t want a bunch of strangers teleporting into their living suite.

When they appeared in the courtyard, a host of guards came running with swords drawn. Argo stepped forward, and they recognized him immediately. Among his own guardsmen, he was well known outside his formal wear.

“These people are from Clobalt,” he said to the approaching guards. “They can explain what happened. Give them something to eat, take care of their injuries, and provide lodging in the city. We’ll host them here until they decide what to do with themselves. They can stay in the realm or leave. Up to them.”

“S-sir!” The guards saluted but refrained from referring to him by a royal title, as he’d trained them to do.

Argo nodded at the guards, who dispersed to manage the Clobaltians.

“Uh, guys?” Setia said, drawing his and Varric’s attention. She held out her wrist. The blue Orbeel in the silver bracelet blinked at regular intervals.

“Bernadea is summoning us,” Argo said. At least that meant they had their next destination, though he worried what she’d found.

“To Bernadea’s, then?” Varric asked, and Argo nodded.

Varric teleported them into Bernadea’s entrance hall. Preena blinked at them with bleary eyes, apparently bored from seeing them so often. Varric’s stomach grumbled, and he pulled out some of his snacks. Argo regretted not staying in Yerevir long enough for a meal. They stepped under the archway between rooms and immediately halted. Bernadea stood at her tech device on some sort of exercise equipment with pedals. The device allowed her to make motions like walking, but in place. It must have added some form of resistance, because sweat drenched her skin and she gasped for air. After stepping slowly, she suddenly burst into a wild sprint on the device, all while poking fiercely on her keypad.

“Bernie?” Varric called out. He took a bite of a jelly roll.

Bernadea slowed her pace and glanced at them, sweat dripping off her nose.

“What happened in Clobalt?” she asked.

“The city was destroyed,” Setia said. “The Sage broke their Orbeels and dropped the city to the ground. About thirty people survived.”

“I definitely don’t like the sounds of this Orbeel-breaking Sage.” Bernadea scowled and further slowed on her walking device. “I like my tech too much.”

“Why did you call for us?” Setia showed the blinking Orbeel on her bracelet.

“Oh!” Bernadea whacked the button on her corresponding device, turning it off. Then she resumed her high-speed pedaling, prodding at her keypad. “I’ve been looking for ways to track Knoll the same way we track Ethari. We can usually only track magical creatures, but since he’s an Interloper, I thought we might find some trace of his magic.”

“Humans and Ethari usually need to be scanned by a special device in order to track individuals,” Setia said, frowning. She crossed her arms and eyed Bernadea suspiciously. “How else could you
