Chapter Eighteen

TAISUN

The scratch along my forearm and the pounding aches in my side and head tell me Jiani’s been hurt before Faylan rushes to kneel before me. “My lord! Jiani’s been attacked by Shandig and Shen.”

Judging from how much pain I’m feeling from Jiani, I don’t have time to kill the woman. “Detain her and begin searching the palace grounds for evidence.”

“Yes, sire,” Ealas says, going to Faylan to carry out my order.

I leave the throne room, following my heart to find her in the middle of Shen’s realm, a prisoner of the Golden Treasures Tower. Even though I’m entering into a trap, I can’t leave her there. I don’t bother walking to the immortal palace but teleport, ignoring the risks. Despite Shen and his court’s protective dome over their entire realm, I slip in easily, glad they continue to underestimate me.

Once at the palace gates, I’m surprised to find no one recognizes me. I suspect because they don’t realize I’ve escaped. The aches and scratch’s sting have eased, leaving me grateful Shen isn’t willing to extend Jiani’s suffering. I pause as a couple of Shen’s lesser soldiers pass by before I keep going across the large atrium.

When I’m at the tower’s entrance, I reach out for Jiani’s heart with my own to be sure she’s here. She is, and I’m glad Shen has her in the middle at least. I’d feared he would throw her in the frozen depths where I’d been held. I cloak myself with a hiding spell and hurry to her floor.

No door stands between me, Jiani and Shen as they sit at a fine table. He has a setup of desserts and wines for her. Something in my chest twists when she laughs, giving Shen a brilliant smile I’ve never received from her. A metallic clang rings out behind me. I turn to find I’m trapped in a huge hall full of mirrors. Only, the mirrors show various times of Jiani having a meal with Shen. “What is this?” I growl, although I already know. Shen’s trapped me in an illusion.

I can only watch as Jiani talks about me, how she was merely trying to protect me. She apologizes to him for being afraid and asks him to forgive me. Shen laughs, saying he can’t promise anything and she was right to come back to him. The walls shake and I don’t hear her reply.

“You’ll never find her, Taisun,” Shen says, his voice echoing off of the glass surrounding me. “Give up now, go home with your tail between your legs, and I might not level the puny plot of land you call your realm.”

“And if I don’t? If I destroy every image in here and take Jiani home?” I offer.

“Break the mirror holding the true image and she dies. I’m sure you don’t care about a lesser spirit being sent back to oblivion.
