GAERON

"Gaeron?"

At the sound of his name, he pushed himself off the wall he'd been resting against. Exhaustion had gotten the better of him and he'd just allowed someone to walk up on unaware. Had it been an enemy, it would have surely cast him to the Land of Plenty Waters.

"Drulf," he said with a weak smile, "you ugly bastard."

The large Buk Toh hurried over. Squatting, he hooked Gaeron's arm over his shoulders and grunted as both men stood. Drulf held onto him even after Gaeron was on his feet. "I would say you don't look much better."

"Probably true. But I just fought a Smoke Mask. What's your excuse?"

"A Smoke Mask?" Drulf asked, pulling back.

"Give me some water and I'll tell you how I had my ass kicked." Drulf did, and Gaeron upheld his end. He told the gathered group about his run-in with the creature after he'd been separated from the army. They listened, obviously now aware the ruins held more than the threat of spiders and Skinless.

"It seems these ruins are more mysterious than we first imagined," Dokka said, the lips of his short snout rippling.

Shel smiled, making her tusks protrude like a devil. "Maybe more than you imagined, but you're not exactly the brightest lizard in the world, now, are you? In fact, once I saw a trained snake at a spring festival who could rival you for brains. Actually, he was probably smarter. You should have seen the tricks he performed."

Gaeron extended his hand, shaking the water skin. "More water. This one is empty."

Dokka unslung his from his belt and handed it over. He stepped back as Gaeron finished it off, too.

"You're going to throw that up as soon as we set off," Shel laughed.

Gaeron nodded with a tired smile. "Probably. But vomit will have never tasted better. Where are we off to?" He scanned the group. Between the exhaustion and dehydration, he hadn't noticed one particular absence in the crowd of fifty people pushing in to hear his story. "Where's Chali?"

A pensive expression gripped Drulf's face. "We don't know."

The water skin dropped to Gaeron's side. "What do you mean you don't know?"

Dokka briefed him on the battle against the Skinless, and how Chali had held them off until she was forced down a tunnel, away from the army.

"By the gods."

"Hey, at least she's alive," Shel said. "It could have been much, much worse, little man. We've been looking for her, but at least we know she got away from those bony bastards. They wouldn't stop coming."

"No, no. I understand. We've got to find her. Let's set up a search."

Arms crossed, standing at the side of the conversation, Tik asked, "Who anointed you to lead this army in her absence?"

"I'm not leading it. I'm pushing us to find Chali so we can break these blasted Skinless and get out of the stinking ruins. Do you have a different plan?"

Tik turned away with a scowl.

"So we set out then?"

"Do you need rest? You look beaten-down, human," Dokka said, wrapping his three–fingered hands around one another.
