Dain stood, breathing hard, shaking all over, and looked down into the pit. He knew where it went and knew he didn’t want to go into it. That he had to was something else he knew, and he was afraid if his guards went with him they wouldn’t get out alive. They would end up trapped there, tortured beyond enduring for eternity. Men didn’t escape the Gates. They had learned that their whole lives. Dain feared their presence could cause him a distraction he couldn’t afford, worrying about their safety.

He turned from the hole in the ground, and found both men looking to him to tell them what to do. Dain could see that they were fighting off a growing fear at even being this close. Dread of the place filled the entire clearing. Terror of it oozed from the ground in sickening waves, and grew the longer they stood there. Dain could feel it, and knew that the two guards felt it more.

“I don’t think you can go with me,” Dain said.

Avry braced himself and walked over to the edge, looking down into the dark. “At this point, really, we don’t care what you think,” the guard said, even though he was having a hard time even speaking. His teeth were clenched. “If you’re going, we’re all going, like it or not, and we ought to get on with it. The longer we stand here, the harder it is to not turn around and just ...”

“...run,” Dain said, finishing for him. “I know. It’s just that, if you go in there, you might not...you won’t get back out. All one of those things has to do is touch you and...” He stopped then, suddenly wondering if he could shield them from it, from the black things that destroyed light and life. He knew how to make a shield for himself, and Marc had already shielded him from Maralt, though Dain suspected that Maralt was strong enough now to break it.

He reached over to Avry, setting his fingers on his forehead. He was immediately aware of the source of life inside him, pausing briefly to look at it. There was a tremendous sense of duty from him, and a courage and determination equal to his own. Dain smiled at that, then wrapped that light in a shield, making it as strong as he possibly could without draining too much of his own strength. He did the same thing to Mikk, found the same resolve in him, and hoped shielding them would be enough. Really, Dain didn’t want to go in by himself. A demon and his spawn awaited him, and he knew he couldn’t face that alone.

“How’s that feel?” he asked them and they both nodded, though the shield did nothing to ease their sense of fear. “All right then.”

“Is there, you know, some sort of plan?” Avry asked as Dain took a step down over the rim. “Other than just walking in there?”

Dain shook his head and kept going. “Maralt will try to get to me as fast as possible.
