Chapter 9

“That woman is creepy,” Andrea said, sipping her coffee later that evening while we gathered around Lily’s kitchen table.

We cleared the house of everyone except me, Ellie, Lily, Lorcan, Jake, Andrea, and Bella. Oh...and Pandora. I thought the demon had skedaddled after Samantha, but she remained behind to see what plans we’d come up with, adding her two cents here and there until I thought Bella would blow.

The rest of my team went back to our site to get some sleep since Brian pulled some strings and they would now be allowed to continue with the appraisals since only my tent was a crime scene. It would remain closed for business—leaving Bella and me free to help solve the case. Before Antoine left, he offered the team as backup.

“Just keep me updated and say the word—we will be here if you need us, Mags.”

Dara wanted to stay behind with Madame Myna and give us a hand with the case, but Antoine ushered her out, with her complaining all the way back to the fairgrounds, I was certain of it.

It didn’t get past me that Tor chose to go with the rest of my group and not offer to stay. I was now too angry with him and his insecurities to give a flippity-flip, and if he thought I was going to apologize for something I had no control over, he had another think coming.

Brian Chase showed up, and I was struck again at just how incredibly handsome the man was. Longish black hair, eyes the color of the Pacific during a tempest, and a killer smile—I wondered at how the man remained single all these years, then remembered Lily and he were an item for a time. I turned to gaze at Lorcan, then smiled. Lily went for the solid and reliable—and the also incredibly good-looking empath chose to not get caught up in the intensity that was one Brian Chase, detective and veritum. But I could tell the man still held a candle for my cousin—so could Lorcan for that matter.

She placed a coffee at Brian’s spot and pushed a tray of cookies toward him. Brian gratefully took a few and munched while he spoke. He looked like he hasn’t eaten much since this mess happened.

“If you thought she was creepy, you should’ve seen the guy that showed up from The Order of Origin. That man looked like an ancient werewolf who lost himself to the beast within. I thought he would transform and gobble up everyone in sight for a moment there. Talk about intense.” Brian placed a file on the table then sighed before he continued. “I don’t know why I’m sharing this with you all, but...well, it is what it is. I know you are going to try and solve this case on your own, so I am going to give you details that no one else is privy to. Just don’t let them get out, OK?”

We all nodded, and he began to read from the notes in the file.
