Chapter 28

It was a good phone call, as far as they go. Nicky had winced when she saw the number, one she’d added to her contacts after her and Jen’s visit the previous week, just in case she ever needed him. She had considered letting the call go to voicemail so she could at least filter it, ring him back if she deemed it necessary. Sort the wheat from the chaff.

As it turned out, he’d kept the card she and Jen had left. Nicky could imagine it had been neatly filed somewhere, probably in alphabetical order on a well organised and slightly OCD desk. She’d answered the call expecting to lose five minutes of her life for good.

“Is that DS Nicky Green?” he’d asked very formally, and despite having called her number. She’d rolled her eyes, already regretting taking the call. “I know you said to call you if we thought of anything, or found anything, and we have.”

Nicky waited. Silence. She realised Gary Hunt was expecting a response.

“And what have you remembered, Gary?”

“Well, not me exactly. We have an old guy who’s been off sick, Ben. Ben Miller. Not the actor, he gets that all the time…”

“And what has Ben remembered, Gary?” Nicky was trying to mask the impatience in her tone, but wasn’t convinced she was doing a very good job of doing so.

“Well, he’s been here for a very long time. He was here when your gang were incarcerated here, and he’s remembered an occasion during a visit where Joe Davies attacked Alan Reynolds, or tried to attack him anyway. He’s having a good think why but he recalls several incidents of disputes between the men. I just thought it would be worth you speaking with him.”

Nicky’s mood tempered quickly. A glimmer of hope had shone and Gary Hunt now firmly had her attention.

“I’ll come over now, Gary, if that’s ok?” It wasn’t really a question. “Is Ben working for the next few hours? Could I borrow him for a bit?”

Gary agreed and Nicky felt a twinge in her spine. She actually felt something tangible could come from speaking with Ben, and she was eager to find out what it was.

She was already walking towards Rob’s office at pace, with her mobile phone still in her right hand, slipping her coat onto her left arm mid-stride. Rob looked up as she got nearer to the door.

“I’ve had a call from Gary Hunt at Gartree, he said he’d like to see me. There’s a guy who’s been off on long-term sick. He’s just got back to work and he might know something of interest. Alright if I head off now, Gov?”

“Yeah, course it is, go!” Rob wafted Nicky away with his hands. “We need momentum and an injection of pace; anything new will feed the masses and keep the wheels turning, so go and find something!!”

Nicky enjoyed the drive out to Gartree. It was drier than last time and with a hint of blue sky overhead, with the sun trying hard to put in an appearance.
