CHAPTER 58

THERE WAS A CAVE BEHIND Cat’s home near the Brazos River. He played there as a young boy and made his fort there. Leroy would meet him at the cave and they would pretend they were holding off an Indian attack. It was a perfect place to have fun and hide. Cat found signs where his daddy played there as a young boy, too.

Painted on the entrance of the cave was a warning to all who happened upon it: “Pete’s Cave, Stay Out!”

His daddy smiled as he realized Cat had found his childhood playground.

“I wondered when you would find it. I used to camp there when I was your age,” his daddy informed him.

Cat called it Pete’s Cave from the time he could read the graffiti left by his father’s boyish hand. He explored its different caverns for hours. When he was younger it seemed like a magical place. As he grew into a young man it was the perfect place for friends to meet up, drink beer, and party.

He learned humans weren’t the only ones to enjoy Pete’s Cave when he happened upon a bobcat. The cat showed its teeth and released a high-pitched cry that frightened him. He noticed the carcass of a rabbit and realized the bobcat was protecting its kill. He slowly backed out of the cave to safety. He would never go back inside without a gun.
