Chapter 19

The drive back to his home was uneventful. The wreck had been cleaned up, and nothing showed but a few skid marks and some broken glass that bloody WV State Route 28 had claimed another life. How many more would have to die before the state did something about this death trap?

He pulled into his driveway, went up the slight hill, and saw a strange vehicle with Florida tags parked behind his house. Someone was sitting in it, and the body shape told him it was a man. Cautiously Tom pulled up beside the vehicle. The man looked familiar. He knew him. It was Roger Pyles.

The men got out of their vehicles. Tom said, "Hello, Roger. Long time, no see. What brings you to this neighborhood? Why aren’t you in the Sunshine State?

"Good to see you, Tom. Far better than last time when we both almost went to jail. I'm doing pretty good. What am I doing here? I wish it was under better circumstances, but my late wife's father passed, so I'm up here for the funeral. Sad how families only get together for funerals and weddings."

"Yeah, I can relate. My family's the same. How long have you been waiting?’

“Not long. After I disabled your alarm systems, I rapped on the door, but got no answer.”

“My alarm systems?

“The dog and donkey. The latter fussed up a storm that I thought would wake the dead. I gave him an apple, and then we were friends.”

Tom smiled as he thought of his recent fiasco with Nacho and an apple, but he said nothing. "His name’s Nacho, but how did you get past the dog?”

“He growled at me at first. I talked to him a little. What I think converted him to accepting me was he probably smelled my dog on me.”

“You still got K9?’

“Yes I do, and a cat.”

“Never thought of you as a cat person.”

“The cat just showed up and made herself at home. I think someone dumped her off. She was half-starved and terrified. When I first saw her eating the dog’s food, she took off like greased lightning. Took me a long time to get her to trust me, but now we’re buddies. I’ve been cat-lapped many times by her. Once she makes herself at home in my lap, moving her’s a chore. Those claws come out, and you better be careful removing her, or you're gonna get scratched. She's a tortoiseshell and has the personality of Tigger. Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy. I named her Patches.”

“We’ve had one like that when Sarah and me were first married, but we’re down to a dog and a donkey now, no cats or other critters. So you passed the dog test with flying colors?’

"Yup, and after that, I went to the door and knocked. I figured with all the racket those two made, the dead woulda been woke up, but no one answered, so I waited. I was about to give up, but here you are."

"My wife's in there. The baby's been sick, and neither of them are gettin' much sleep.
