CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

‘M

ud’ said Bataar.

‘Mud?’ parroted Sulki.

‘Mud.’

‘You may have somehow, inexplicably, misunderstood the extraordinarily simple question’ said Sulki. ‘I asked what your favourite colour was.’

This was the depth to which Sulki had sunk to find some conversational traction.

‘Mud best colour’ said Bataar.

‘Of course it is.’

Sulki considered not asking his next question, but the intermittent silence of the last few hours only served to make them longer and any distraction was welcomed, relatively speaking.

‘Why is mud your favourite colour?’

‘It colour of floor when I walk hard at grinding stones. I look at mud for all day.’

‘I see’ said Sulki, reluctantly acknowledging Bataar’s unique logic.

‘My favourite colour is black’ said Sulki. ‘It can hide the deepest of secrets yet exaggerate the brightest of hues.’

‘Black’ said Bataar.

‘Right, well that’s that then.’

They trudged on slowly along the undulating steppes, with Sulki suffocating in the silence once more and Bataar staring straight ahead in neutral contentment.

‘There’ said Sulki at last. ‘Those woods will give us cover for tonight. Come, we should reach them before the light fades.’
