It was almost quitting time when Brock and I were able to make our way to the cafeteria. After a few questions as to who Lisa and Roberta were, we were directed to the staff lounge. When asked if we could ask some questions, Lisa frowned, âI donât like to stay late.â
âIâll pay you each fifty dollars to stay,â Brock said, motioning to a round table with four chairs. âJust for a few minutes, please.â
They both took a seat. Brock and I sat across from them.
I went through my spiel about writing an article in regard to Laurenâs murder. âI was told you both worked that night.â
âHorrible thing,â Roberta said. âYes, we were there. I carried a tray with flutes of champagne. Lisa carried wine. Miss Mayfield had a lot of wine.â
âDid either of you see who came and went from her dressing room?â
âI did,â Lisa said. âI brought the wine straight to her. Her makeup artist was in and out all night. Mr. Hanson was, too. Her manager, that actor, Gary Porter, a janitorââ
âJanitor?â I glanced at Brock. âWhy would a janitor be there during the festivities?â
âI didnât see his face,â Lisa continued, âbut he wore navy coveralls and a baseball cap. He was fat and short.â
Finally, we were getting somewhere. Ben Jones was on the short and hefty scale. Heâd also admitted to being there. He could have arrived earlier than we thought. âAnything else?â
She shrugged. âIâm sure there were others. I didnât camp outside her room, and there was a lot of people there that night.â
âI understand.â I handed them both a business card. âPlease call me if you think of anything at all.â
Roberta stared at the card for a minute. âI didnât see the janitor, but I did smell a perfume that didnât belong to Miss Mayfield.â
âHow do you know that?â Brockâs eyes narrowed.
âBecause I like what she wore and tried to buy some. Way out of my price range. What I smelled when I looked into the room during all the commotion was a lot sweeter. Almost sicky sweet. Something Iâve smelled at the drugstore.â
Amber wore a sweet cologne, but she had a reason to be there. Now, not only would I be looking at everyoneâs shoes, Iâd be sniffing them. I stood and waited while Brock handed each of the women a fifty-dollar bill.
Outside, I said, âWe need to talk to Ben Jones. He fits the description of the person Lisa saw going into Laurenâs room.â
âI agree.â We returned to the maintenance shed to find out Rod and Ben had left for the day.
âWhat kind of perfume did Lauren wear?â I asked.
âGypsy something. Itâs not that expensive. Around fifty dollars.â
I rolled my eyes. âThatâs a lot of money for someone who makes minimum wage, Brock. Stop being a snob.â
âIâm not a snob.â He frowned. âAm I?â
âYou tend to be.â By now we had reached my car and I slid into the driverâs seat.
Brock got in the other side. âI never would have thought of myself that way.
