Chapter 15

We know that help will come.

We believe that the best of Humanity’s Warriors had not perished in the blazing abyss.

Some day they will return and lead us into battle against evil,

And we must be ready, so guard your lives and the lives of those you love.

“Book of Hope”

Verse XiV

THERE WAS NOTHING FOR ME to pack for the road, I just needed to get my sword from the house. Irma had gone to join the rest of her villagers. After the disappearance of the elder and his son, the girl had every chance of improving her life, and I could help her with that. It wouldn’t be difficult.

Ditras had enough time not only to find people but also to fully equip them. There were five men standing in front of me: Ditras, the skinny lad named Anar, a pair of stout fellows who were clearly brothers, Bers and Cat, and slightly to the side, a long-haired young man named George.

The latter was clearly a guide, and a very good one. His level of RE output was nine, while the others were fives.

Everyone had similar weapons and armor: short bows and travel bags on their backs, swords, and long multipurpose knives on their belts. The knives looked military.

“Can you get five people there and back in one go?” I asked George, looking him straight in the eye.

“Not much equipment?” The guide asked and glanced at Ditras. The commander nodded almost imperceptibly, and the young man seemed relieved.

I could have gotten upset that they didn’t trust me, and demanded that they see me as their senior. Instead, I found it satisfying that the guide didn’t have any trust in a stranger. It wasn’t just normal; it was very good.

If the lad had told me everything about himself right away, I might have had doubts about his suitability. But there was a proper chain of subordination and trust: George trusted Ditras, and Ditras trusted me.

“Plus armor,” I added. “Possibly some loot, as well.”

“I won’t have a problem with up to seven people,” George confidently replied. “If it’s there and back right away. If there’s a break of five to seven hours, I can take ten.”

“Don’t sell yourself short,” Ditras said. “He can do more, Achilles. He’s one of our best guides. Don’t mind his age.”

“He’s right, Ditras,” I shook my head. “Remember what happened last night. Let’s head to the dugout, we need to get you ready.”

“Us?” Anar asked in surprise, then fell silent under his commander’s stern gaze.

“You,” I nodded. “That’s our top priority right now.”

We left the village and headed towards our cache. It turned out Ditras didn’t waste time and got the trophy armor into relatively good shape, cleaning it off all the blood. It wasn’t damaged to begin with. I had tried to act as carefully as possible when taking it off the raiders.

The Protector infantry armor was among the simplest among combat protection. Its main advantage was the ease of use and a very high level of protection against aggressive environments, such as acids, chemicals, and gases.
